Legal Operations Manager

Posted Feb 02
Full Time
HybridSan Francisco, California

Grammarly is excited to offer a remote-first hybrid working model. Team members work primarily remotely in the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Germany, or Poland. Certain roles have specific location requirements to facilitate collaboration at a particular Grammarly hub.

All roles have an in-person component: Conditions permitting, teams meet 2–4 weeks every quarter at one of Grammarly’s hubs in San Francisco, Kyiv, New York, Vancouver, and Berlin, or in a workspace in Kraków. This flexible approach gives team members the best of both worlds: plenty of focus time along with in-person collaboration that fosters trust and unlocks creativity.

Grammarly team members in this role must be based in the United States or Canada, and they must be able to collaborate in person 3 weeks per quarter, traveling if necessary to the hub(s) where the team is based.

The opportunity

Grammarly is the world’s leading AI writing assistance company trusted by over 30 million people and 70,000 professional teams every day. From instantly creating a first draft to perfecting every message, Grammarly’s product offerings help people at 96% of the Fortune 500 get their point across—and get results. Grammarly has been profitable for over a decade because we’ve stayed true to our values and built an enterprise-grade product that’s secure, reliable, and helps people do their best work—without selling their data. We’re proud to be one of Inc.’s best workplaces, a Glassdoor Best Place to Work, one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential Companies, and one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in AI.

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for a Legal Operations Manager to join our growing Legal team. Reporting to the General Counsel, Grammarly’s Legal Operations Manager will create and optimize processes and practices to improve Grammarly’s day-to-day efficiency and effectiveness of Grammarly Legal, facilitate change, and control costs. Our ideal candidate is passionate about legal operations and knowledge management, including managing tools and optimizing processes to enable scale.

This role will involve collaborating with legal and internal teams, including Sales, Procurement, Customer Success, Product, Engineering, and Revenue Operations. The person in this position will be a key decision-maker in shaping Grammarly Legal's future. The ability to manage multiple activities on the fly and adapt quickly between high-level strategy and operational implementation is essential for success in this role.

Your impact

As a Legal Operations Manager, you’ll be introduced to agreements in place today, along with their existing processes and tools for generation, redline, and completion. You will also be immersed in our IP program, including our innovation discovery work streams. In this role, you’ll dive into the pressing projects supporting user trust, safety, and privacy. You will also support, set up, and work collaboratively to choose and implement the best process, tools, documentation, and enablement to ensure these agreements and programs are completed smoothly.

Over the first 12 months, this will translate into continuing to finetune a seamless process for the Legal team and our cross-functional partners, developing an increasingly better-coordinated process across different parts of the business. You will learn about next-generation AI offerings, scaling a thriving business, synergies with a consumer-B2B business, and developing and scaling a global legal function. Along the way, you will be our best internal critic and cheerleader, identifying inefficiencies and unblocking tricky problems.

In this role, you will:

  • Define, develop, and implement the Legal team’s legal operations strategy and initiatives.
  • Support Grammarly’s IP portfolio.
  • Work closely with the General Counsel and team members on the legal department budget, forecasting, and accruals.
  • Develop and enforce processes and policies to manage outside counsel usage and spending.
  • Assist with team onsight planning and overall team engagement.
  • Promote best practices for knowledge management.
  • Evaluate and improve how legal intakes, assigns, and manages work.
  • Develop and report on key operational and substantive metrics for the department that will better inform decision-making.
  • Assist the department’s efforts to create and refine forms, playbooks, systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Plan for, select, implement, optimize, and maintain legal tech to streamline new or existing processes.
  • Manage special projects as required or requested.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Embodies our EAGER values—is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.
  • Is inspired by our MOVE principles, which are the blueprint for how things get done at Grammarly: move fast and learn faster, obsess about creating customer value, value impact over activity, and embrace healthy disagreement rooted in trust.
  • Is able to collaborate in person 3 weeks per quarter, traveling if necessary to the hub where the team is based.
  • Brings a problem-solving and detail-oriented approach to their work, a track record of excellent organizational skills, and unfailing follow-up to effectively manage multiple activities of varying difficulty, priority, and complexity.
  • Demonstrates the ability to independently move projects forward by gaining support from others while working in a cross-functional role.
  • Brings an entrepreneurial drive and comfort working in ambiguous, quickly changing environments.
  • Has a strong sense of accountability and integrity, taking ownership of projects and responsibilities and resolving issues proactively.
  • Is a great communicator and has a service mindset that empowers others to hit their goals.
  • Has at least 2 years of legal operations experience with exposure to commercial sales processes, registered IP, and relevant tools for success, including Salesforce and  Ironclad.

Our remote-first hybrid model enables a highly collaborative culture supported by our EAGER (ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable) values. We work to foster belonging among team members in a variety of ways. This includes our employee resource groups, Grammarly Circles, which promote connection among those with shared identities, such as BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ team members, women, and parents.
