GENERAL COUNSEL

JOB SUMMARY:

The legal counsel is ultimately responsible for oversight and guidance pertaining to legal matters and decisions. This dynamic role supports all functional departments and works with Executive and Plant leadership daily to mitigate risk, ensure compliance, and provide insight based on legal changes affecting businesses. This individual will provide direct supervision to a Contract Specialist. While mostly remote/hybrid, the role is based at our Corporate Headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the company’s legal compliance and ensure that the company is fulfilling its legal obligations.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to management.
  • Manage legal issues of various functional units of company.
  • Assessing risks of each functional unit.
  • Identify proactive solutions to eliminate or mitigate risks.
  • Review contracts for conformance with State and Federal laws and company guidelines.
  • Lead enterprise-wide contract management.
  • Keep abreast of legal changes affecting the business.
  • Develop training on important legal and risk issues affecting business.
  • Manage claims and litigated matters.
  • Liaise with outside counsel.
  • Manage purchasing of outside counsel services.
  • All other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • JD - Doctor of Jurisprudence.
  • Licensed member of the bar in good standing.
  • Previous in-house or firm experience.
  • Year of Experience: 10-15 Years. Experience in contracts and transactions is required.

TRAVEL:

  • Travel Required: Yes – 10%

  • Experience with corporate governance issues.
  • In-depth understanding of how legal issues affect organizations.
  • Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives.
  • High degree of professional ethics, integrity and gravitas.
  • Excellent judgement and analytical skills.
  • First class interpersonal and communication skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant standards, legislation, codes of practice, guidance and operating procedures.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate.
  • Strong negotiating skills.
  • Excellent coaching, influencing, conflict resolution, and change management skills.
  • Ability to think strategically to anticipate legal issues or risks and labor relations needs and offer solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills, information management proficiency and collaborative management style.
  • Strong attention to detail skills.
