Position Summary

The Fortune Society (Fortune) is currently seeking a Senior Director, Compliance, who will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to ensure organization-wide compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as Fortune standards and policies. The incoming Sr. Director, Compliance will be responsible for the assessment of compliance issues and potential breaches, assuring they are appropriately evaluated, investigated and resolved. The Sr. Director, Compliance must have experience assessing and mitigating organizational risk and be passionate about the work of serving individuals with criminal legal system history. The ideal candidate will develop effective policies and procedures that reflect the values of the organization, work with organization leaders to tailor the policies for pragmatic application, and protect the organization from organizational and legal risk. This position reports to the General Counsel.

The Sr. Director, Compliance must be adaptive and proactive in the management of revolving/competing deadlines and must be anticipatory and efficient in response to the unpredictable nature of the work.

Analysis

The Sr. Director, Compliance must have strong analytical and data management skills. Additionally, the Sr. Director, Compliance must be able to inform and advise Fortune senior leadership on both risk and compliance issues.

Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leads and implements an effective program to enhance integrity, compliance, and the ethical conduct of Fortune activities. Develops, monitors, and assesses the performance of the Compliance Program and related activities on an ongoing basis, taking appropriate steps to improve its effectiveness, when necessary.
  • Leads cross-functional working groups, mentoring and coaching managers across various departments and functions. Develops and maintains partnerships with Fortune executives and managers, providing advice and guidance to leadership on compliance matters and risk mitigation
  • Oversees the development of a fraud prevention program in collaboration with relevant Fortune departments to ensure appropriate billing practices, contractual compliance, and handling of agency funds.
  • Participates on the Compliance Committee and facilitates efforts to identify, assess and prioritize organizational risks. Ensures that identified risks are appropriately mitigated and that leadership is kept informed of key risks and related strategies.
  • Recommends, develops, and implements changes to operating policies and procedures, writing and overseeing revisions, and publishing new and updated compliance policies and procedures
  • Coordinates the development of standards, education, outreach, and training programs on ethics, including information sessions, workshops, e-learning ethics training and briefings, in order to increase awareness of ethical issues. Ensures that Fortune implements annual training on the Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Assists with response and remediation associated with regulatory actions
  • Manages risks related to third-party vendor agreements
  • Develops internal controls by leveraging data and technology solutions to improve business processes
  • In collaboration with the Chief Technology Officer, ensure data privacy requirements are maintained and updated, as needed
  • In collaboration with internal medical/mental health departments, advise and ensure compliance with Medicaid, health record, and privacy regulations
  • Assist the General Counsel in monitoring new legislation impacting Fortune compliance, including in the areas of not-for-profit corporate governance, pension plan requirements, employment law, and funder reporting requirements
  • Perform reviews of high-risk areas and manage internal audit process, coordinating with the Fortune Quality Assurance Department, to advise on areas for improvement.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of the Fortune mission and a connection to it as it relates to the position
  • 3-5 years of compliance experience;
  • Strong project management skills and a demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize tasks
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills to relate to a diverse community of stakeholders
  • Strong ability to think strategically, work independently, and develop strategies to prioritize risk and compliance issues
  • Knowledge of incident management systems
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work professionally in a busy, team-oriented environment
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation, and facilitation communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion regarding all matters
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools

Travel Requirements: Will require local travel to our program sites and citywide meetings where appropriate.
