Job Overview And Responsibilities
Counsel for United Airlines, Inc.’s in-house legal department providing legal counsel and guidance on all aspects of commercial transactions (with an emphasis on United’s loyalty program related matters, marketing/sponsorship agreements, media agreements) and related legal matters.
United’s Legal Department is a key business partner to the various departments at United. We provide legal advice and counsel to and on behalf of United Airlines Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiaries
From the station level to the Board room, the Legal Department is involved in all aspects of United’s business. In addition, we provide essential advice in assessing legal risks and regulatory and corporate compliance, and we offer training on important company policies.
- Independently handle a wide variety of commercial transactional matters, including negotiating and drafting various commercial agreements, with emphasis on those related to United’s loyalty program, marketing/sponsorships, and media agreements
- Independently handle and provide actionable and practical counseling to internal business partners in connection with loyalty program related matters
- Draft and negotiate loyalty related agreements
- Independently handle and provide actionable and practical counseling to internal business partners in connection with sponsorship and media related matters; draft and negotiate sponsorship and media agreements
- Independently handle and provide actionable and practical counseling to internal business partners in connection with marketing materials and marketing related matters
- Draft and negotiate marketing related agreements
- Retain and manage outside counsel, as necessary, including budgetary responsibility for engagements
Qualifications
Required
- Juris Doctorate degree
- Member in good standing of the bar in any jurisdiction of the United States required and, within a reasonable period of time, authorization to practice law in-house for the Company in Illinois
- Minimum of 5-7+ years of practice with a reputable law firm or large multinational company in the United States
- Minimum of 5-7+ years of previous legal experience in commercial transactional matters and agreements
- Minimum of 5-7+ years previous in-house experience negotiating and drafting loyalty program related agreements
- Significant knowledge of a variety of commercial agreements, including marketing, sponsorship and media related matters
- Excellent time management skills and business judgment with a capacity to make decisions and give practical, timely, clear and accurate legal advice
- Strong interpersonal communication abilities that enable individual to work effectively with a wide range of strategic, technical and practical aspects of business
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across multiple corporate functions while building strong personal relationships
- High level of emotional intelligence required
- Keen ability to build relationships across the organization
- Ability to partner with the business team to solve complex issues by providing concise, pragmatic advice
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- Strong client focused and ethical mindset with the ability to change priorities as needed by the Company’s business
- Knowledge of loyalty program agreements and related matters
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
Preferred
- Minimum of 10+ years of practice with a reputable law firm or large multinational company in the United States
