JOB DESCRIPTION
Many large organizations, especially those with a national footprint rely on a Compliance Manager to ensure that they follow external and internal regulations related to labor and employment.
The primary and essential duty of a Compliance Manager is to keep the ethical integrity of Extra Space intact as it relates to labor and employment law. They ensure that the organization complies with Federal, State and Local laws through regular audits, compliance programs, investigating and communicating new mandates, developing policies and procedures, tracking current processes, providing training to employees, and collaborating with various departments to mitigate risks and maintain ethical standards. Through their work, we minimize our risk of non-compliance and associated legal action and penalties.
Primary Responsibilities
Ensures compliance with HR laws and regulations
Monitor regulatory compliance changes, staying informed of new Federal, state and local legislation related to human resource functions
Work directly with department heads to identify compliance issues and new regulation affecting their teams
Conduct audits to ensure adherence to standards, identify gaps or risk and recommend policy changes or process automation
Ensure written and verbal policies remain compliant with Federal and state law
Ensure system compliance through review and testing
Assess and interpret risks associated with payroll, employment, benefits and compensation practices and develop strategies to mitigate them
Communicate and train on new or updated policies as appropriate
Develop and maintain system for tracking/reporting on compliance activities, findings and recommendations
Job Specifications
Ability to lead projects and make recommendations to leadership
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail
Strong knowledge of HR practices and laws related to the following (this list is not exhaustive): Wage and Hour, Payroll, Health and Wellness Benefits, Job Posting and Hiring Practices, Leaves of Absence and Accommodation, Termination and Final Pay, Document Retention, IRS and DOL reporting, HIPAA, SOX
Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse teams and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization
Proven ability to develop and implement compliance programs and initiatives
Experience conducting compliance audits and investigations
Proficiency in using compliance management software and tools
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources preferred. Advanced degree or professional certification in compliance (e.g., Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional - CCEP) is a plus
