United’s Legal Department is a key business partner to the various departments at United. We provide legal advice and counsel to and on behalf of United Airlines Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiaries. From the station level to the Board room, the Legal Department is involved in all aspects of United’s business. In addition, we provide essential advice in assessing legal risks and regulatory and corporate compliance, and we offer training on important company policies.

Key Responsibilities

Counsel for United Airlines, Inc.’s in-house legal department providing legal counsel and guidance on all aspects of commercial transactions (with an emphasis on technology-related transactions, including SAAS subscriptions and related legal matters). Work directly with Procurement teams and internal business units to draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements related to Procurement transactions and other matters.

  • Independently handle and provide actionable and practical counseling to internal business partners, including United’s IT Procurement team, in connection with IT procurement (primarily software licenses and purchases); draft and negotiate related agreements and, as necessary, other commercial agreements.
  • Independently handle and provide actionable and practical counseling to internal business partners in connection with general procurement matters, including consulting services agreements, general services agreements, and HR related agreements; draft and negotiate related agreements.
  • Retain and manage outside counsel, as necessary, including budgetary responsibility for engagements.
  • This position is hybrid, three days in office, based in Chicago.

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Juris Doctorate degree.
  • 5+ years of practice with a reputable law firm or large company, or a combination of the two.
  • Member in good standing of the bar in any jurisdiction of the United States required and, within a reasonable period of time, authorization to practice law in-house for the Company in Illinois.
  • Ability to draft complex commercial agreements, and advise on commercial procurement related matters, with an emphasis on IT procurement.
  • Excellent time management skills and business judgment with a capacity to make decisions and give practical, timely, clear and accurate legal advice.
  • Strong interpersonal communication abilities that enable individual to work effectively with a wide range of strategic, technical and practical aspects of business.
  • Self-motivated, strategic thinking.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to high standards of quality and ethics.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with colleagues within the United Legal Department and with clients at all levels of the company across multiple departments.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively set and adjust priorities.
  • Proven ability to give practical, timely, clear and accurate legal advice.
  • High level of emotional intelligence.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship.

What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Prior in-house legal experience at a multi-national company.
  • At least 3 years of experience at a reputable law firm.
  • Strong knowledge of market terms in IT agreements.
