We’re seeking a driven and experienced Associate General Counsel - Risk Management, Litigation & Operations to help us scale with confidence. In this high-impact role, you’ll serve as a key legal and strategic advisor—leading our risk management efforts, managing litigation across a national portfolio, and providing hands-on legal support to our operations team to ensure efficient, compliant, and resilient growth.

Why This Role Matters Managing legal exposure and operational risk is essential to protecting our assets, ensuring investor confidence, and enabling scalable growth. This role sits at the intersection of legal, risk management, and property operations—empowering the company to move quickly and confidently across markets. By establishing strong risk frameworks, placing proper insurance coverage, overseeing litigation, and supporting vendor contract negotiations, this individual will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the firm’s portfolio and supporting the teams that drive our daily success.

What You’ll Do Risk Management

  • Develop and oversee the company's risk management program, ensuring comprehensive coverage and compliance.
  • Manage the placement and renewal of property, casualty, and business insurance policies across the portfolio.
  • Handle insurance claims, working closely with brokers, carriers, and internal teams to ensure timely and effective resolution.
  • Advise on risk mitigation strategies related to property operations, vendor engagements, and construction activities.

Operations Team Support

  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with vendors, contractors, and service providers, ensuring alignment with company policies and risk management objectives.
  • Develop and maintain standard contract templates and best practices for operational agreements.
  • Provide legal support to property management and construction teams, addressing day-to-day operational issues and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Litigation Management

  • Oversee the company's litigation docket, coordinating with external counsel and internal stakeholders to manage legal disputes effectively.
  • Assess potential legal risks and develop strategies to mitigate exposure.
  • Maintain records of litigation matters and provide regular updates to senior management.

What You Bring

Must-Haves:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Illinois or eligible for in-house counsel registration.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, with a focus on risk management, litigation, insurance, and commercial contracts.
  • Proven experience in drafting and negotiating contracts, managing insurance programs, and handling litigation matters.
  • Strong understanding of real estate operations, property management, and related legal considerations.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

Love-to-Haves:

  • Experience in a real estate investment or property management firm.
  • Familiarity with multi-state real estate operations and associated legal and regulatory frameworks.

Compensation: $160,000 - $200,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
