Position Overview:
We are seeking a General Counsel to join and lead our Legal Division in Las Vegas. The General Counsel will serve as the chief legal advisor for the World Series of Poker, overseeing all legal, regulatory, and compliance matters across domestic and international operations. As a key member of the executive leadership team, this role will provide strategic guidance to ensure the integrity of the WSOP brand, mitigate risk, and ensure compliance with all gaming regulations, commercial contracts, intellectual property rights, licensing obligations, employment law, and corporate governance requirements. The General Counsel will play a pivotal role in supporting the expansion of WSOP’s operations globally.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Commercial Contracts & Negotiations:
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including WSOP live event agreements, sponsorship and licensing deals, broadcast rights, production-related concerns, supplier and talent agreements.
- Protect WSOP's commercial interests in negotiations and partnerships.
- Evaluate new business opportunities, including real money gaming, subscription content service, staking or crowdfunding and related products for legal risk.
Customer Data & Privacy:
- Providing guidance and direction for the USA market around any and all requirements related to data capture and future marketing efforts.
Gaming Compliance & Regulatory Affairs:
- Manage any required compliance with Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB), international regulators, and other relevant authorities.
- Lead licensing processes for any product, event or service in any state which is required.
- Monitor changes in gaming legislation and ensure proactive alignment with evolving regulatory environments.
- Serve as the principal legal advisor to executive leadership, providing actionable guidance on all legal matters affecting WSOP’s operations worldwide.
- Oversee and manage external counsel relationships to ensure high-quality, cost-effective legal services.
Intellectual Property & Brand Protection:
- Oversee protection and enforcement of the WSOP's trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other IP assets.
- Manage legal actions related to brand infringement and unauthorized use of IP.
Employment Law & HR Legal Support
- Advise on employment matters, including executive contracts, labour relations, employee disputes, and policies, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws.
- Support HR in drafting and enforcing internal policies and procedures.
Dispute Resolution & Litigation Management
- Manage and oversee all litigation and dispute resolution matters, including regulatory investigations and commercial disputes.
- Lead settlement negotiations, arbitration, or court proceedings as necessary.
Corporate Development & Expansion
- Support M&A activities, joint ventures, and global expansion initiatives with robust legal due diligence and risk assessment.
- Advise on market entry strategies and regulatory compliance in new territories.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school; active and good standing member of the Nevada State Bar (or ability to obtain Nevada certification promptly).
- Minimum of 8 years of legal experience, with significant experience in gaming, entertainment, sports, or closely regulated industries.
- Proven track record of managing complex legal and regulatory matters in a fast-paced, high-profile environment.
- In-depth knowledge of gaming law, Nevada regulatory frameworks, and international gaming regulations.
- Strong understanding of commercial contracts, intellectual property, employment law, and corporate governance.
- Experience advising senior executives and board-level stakeholders.
- Exceptional negotiation, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
Preferred:
- Experience in esports, online gaming platforms, or sports media rights is an asset.
- Familiarity with international jurisdictions relevant to WSOP’s global operations (Europe, Asia-Pacific, etc.).
