The Office of the General Counsel is seeking an experienced attorney to provide legal advice on all aspects of employment law arising out of the activities of Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley, and the Hospitals' physician foundations. Reporting to the Vice President and General Counsel (with a dotted line reporting to the Deputy General Counsel for Healthcare), this Senior University Counsel role demands a high degree of discretion, flexibility, and excellent client service. The ideal candidate will excel in managing competing interests and executing projects within a dynamic and cutting-edge environment.

Core Responsibilities:

Advise clients in all areas of employment law and labor relations, including discrimination, harassment. disability accommodation and leave management, wage/hour issues, and labor relations. Provide employment litigation risk counseling on various business initiatives. Proactively identify and assess potential legal and reputational risk for clients and recommend practical, creative solutions. Represent SHC, LPCH, SHC Tri-Valley and the physician foundations (and the University as needed) before various federal and state agencies, including EEOC, DOL, DFEH and DLSE, and in private mediation. May be required to represent the clients in civil court to obtain injunctions and restraining orders. Conduct training sessions, such as required sexual harassment training and on pertinent employment law developments. Investigate and respond to agency and individuals’ employment-related claims. Defend SHC and LPCH and SHC Tri-Valley against pre-litigation disputes to minimize litigation exposure. Negotiate agreements. Oversee litigation matters in conjunction with partner law firms.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school. Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Membership in the California Bar or another state’s Bar, with the ability to qualify as registered in-house counsel in California upon starting. Strong client service skills with a capacity to manage competing priorities and projects effectively. Experience in mediations, litigation, and arbitration. Discretion, flexibility, excellent judgment and the ability to collaborate and manage a broad range of client needs in a dynamic academic environment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with outside counsel and staff attorneys. The position requires residency in the Bay Area and in-office attendance three days per week.
