Wiley , a leading law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking a Lateral Recruiting Manager to support our Legal Talent department. The Lateral Recruiting Manager leads and manages all aspects of lateral attorney hiring for the firm. This role works closely with the Chief Talent Officer and Director of Legal Talent to develop and implement innovative and creative strategies that attract top-tier legal talent aligned with the firm’s strategic goals.

This position is eligible to participate in the firm's flexible work program.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • When appropriate, assists with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training new staff in the department
  • Oversees the daily workflow of team members
  • Provides staff with constructive and timely performance feedback and evaluations
  • Handles disciplinary process, including escalating employment matters to the head of the department and the Senior Director of Human Resources when necessary
  • Provides leadership and mentoring to staff, including on-going performance management, feedback and coaching, identification of training opportunities, and preparation of career development plans
  • Provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to professional staff on the Legal Talent team who will be interfacing and providing support for lateral hiring projects, including on-going identification of training opportunities, and follow-up support as needed.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage the full lifecycle for all lateral attorney recruiting (including partners, associates and all attorney-level and attorney-equivalent positions), including candidate sourcing and screening, interview coordination, offer negotiation, and hiring decisions
  • Manage the due diligence process for all lateral hires, including working with the firm’s Conflicts department for proper ethics and conflicts clearance, background checks, conducting reference checks and interfacing with the firm’s General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel as required
  • Engage with the Managing Partner, Executive Committee, and Practice Group leaders to identify and provide support for lateral partner acquisition strategies
  • Collaborate with Practice Group Leaders to identify lateral associate and non-partner attorney hiring needs and develop tailored search strategies aligned with the firm’s strategic goals
  • Manage advertisement of all lateral openings, including development of internal and external communications and job postings
  • Develop and execute innovative and proactive sourcing plans to build strong candidate pipelines and efficient hiring of candidates
  • Review candidate resumes and credentials to identify qualified candidates; conduct all intake screening for candidates and lead follow-up evaluations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all lateral attorney candidates and legal search firms throughout the recruiting process
  • Build and maintain relationships with legal search firms, industry consultants, and other recruiting professionals at peer firms
  • Manage all aspects of candidate interviews, including scheduling, logistics, and interviewer communications
  • Prepare and distribute offer letters and oversee candidate follow up and continued recruitment to close candidates and lead to offer acceptance
  • Maintain candidate and recruiting data in viRecruit and other systems; track and analyze lateral hiring metrics
  • Coordinate pre-arrival integration activities with the firm’s Onboarding and Integration Coordinator and provide transition support up to the new hire’s start date
  • Support the Chief Talent Officer and Director of Legal Talent on strategic initiatives, lateral attorney hiring budget tracking, and candidate research
  • Stay abreast of trends affecting the legal industry and lateral recruitment strategies, participate in industry education and conferences
  • Meets the department’s expectations to retrieve, read and/or respond to firm and client-related e-mail messages during and outside of core business and scheduled work hours by connecting a personal mobile device (smartphone or tablet with a data plan) to the firm’s network

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of five years of law firm recruiting experience
  • Proven experience in developing and executing strategic recruiting initiatives
  • Knowledge of industry trends, best practices, and key contacts in the DC market, or other similar legal market

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position operates in a professional office environment which is usually quiet to moderate
  • Position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets
  • Position requires that the employee be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is primarily a sedentary position. However, some duties and responsibilities may require the employee to lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, occasionally move about to access office equipment, file cabinets, etc.
  • May require employee to carry or lift items weighing up to 10 pounds

The starting salary for this position is $145,000 annually. Actual salary will be determined based on skills, experience (to the extent relevant) and other job-related factors, consistent with applicable law.
