Wiley , a leading law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking a Practice Manager to support our Government Contracts practice group. The Practice Manager has lead responsibility for developing, implementing, and improving the practice group systems, workflows, and business operations of the Government Contracts practice. This position is critical in managing day-to-day operations and executing practice group strategies while driving revenue and increasing profitability. This is a fast-paced leadership role that requires a strong understanding of law firm economics, practice group strategy, best practices, and communication. This role serves as a connector between the services and solutions for clients and the people and resources needed to accomplish the work.

This position is eligible to participate in the firm's flexible work program.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strategic Management

  • Serve as “chief of staff” for practice group leadership
  • Work with the practice group leader and key partners to understand practice group strategy and forecast client needs, service delivery, and requisite staffing needs
  • Manage project portfolio for the practice, tracking projects and tasks, identifying the proper resources to complete them, and maintaining and regularly reporting out real-time status
  • Meet regularly and act as liaison between firm administrative departments and practice to meet practice group needs and objectives, including collaborating with:
  • Marketing on business development efforts, proposals, client alerts, and identification of speaking and authorship opportunities
  • Accounting & Finance on pricing/AFAs, billing and collections, and reporting on accruals and revenue projection
  • Keep current with industry knowledge, hot topics, and changes, and as requested by the practice group leader, provide research and project management in the areas of business development, practice strategy, and industry trends
  • Organize regular practice area communications including practice group meetings, partner meetings, staff meetings and related activities

Knowledge and Resource Management

  • Serve as knowledge management leader to organize and harness practice area resources, capabilities, experiences, exemplary documents, and other resources
  • Assist with integration of staff and attorneys by identifying skills and knowledge critical to success and provide practice group-specific training (onboarding and continuous development) and maintains current reference and just-in-time training resources on intranet
  • Create and maintain standardized procedures, quality control measures, and regular training for staff and attorneys on filing systems, billing guidelines, and other practice group procedures
  • Collaborate with Practice Support management to ensure appropriate professional team staffing and training for practice needs

Operational Management

  • Create, maintain, and publish practice area calendar and collaborate with the Docketing team to ensure cases and deadlines are calendared appropriately
  • Develop and/or modify practice area procedures as needed to achieve best practices and maintain current documentation of same on practice intranet site
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency through utilization of technology or improvement/establishment of standard processes; assist with the development of such solutions where appropriate, and once developed, embed best practices within the group
  • Coordinate technology needs and practice-specific customizations with the Information Services department and facilitate integration of firmwide technology within practice
  • Create systems for efficient case management, including matter portals to organize work product, resources, and case materials in an easily accessible format
  • Monitor the overall workflow within the practice group, including hours monitoring and collaboration with workload partner and professional staff supervisors, in order to ensure even distribution of work, appropriate staffing, and adequate practice support resources and training

Other

  • Meets the department’s expectations to retrieve, read and/or respond to firm and client-related e-mail messages during and outside of core business and scheduled work hours by connecting a personal mobile device (smartphone or tablet with a data plan) to the firm’s network

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of government contracts law and processes
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships at various levels
  • Demonstrated ability to apply innovation in identifying problems and in proposing and implementing solutions
  • Well-developed, sophisticated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple requests, assess priorities, and achieve solutions under tight deadlines
  • Proficiency with technology, advanced capability with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat, and a strong aptitude for learning and evaluating software solutions and other technologies required
  • Demonstration of exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • High level of emotional intelligence
  • Must maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials
  • Must establish and maintain effective working relationships in or out of a team environment
  • Flexibility and willingness to respond to issues during and outside of core business hours

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience required; JD or MBA preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in the law firm environment with progressing levels of responsibility throughout career required , Government Contracts experience very strongly preferred
  • Practice management experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated self-starter who shows ownership and commitment to perform responsibilities with high professional standards

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Position operates in a professional office environment which is usually quiet to moderate
  • Position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets
  • Position requires that the employee be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is primarily a sedentary position. However, some duties and responsibilities may require the employee to lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, occasionally move about to access office equipment, file cabinets, etc.
  • May require employee to carry or lift items weighing up to 10 pounds

The starting salary for this position is $150,000 annually. Actual salary will be determined based on skills, experience (to the extent relevant) and other job-related factors, consistent with applicable law.
