Kemper Life is seeking an Insurance Regulatory and Compliance Counsel. This role within the Legal Department of Kemper Life reports to the Division Compliance Officer, Life & Health and is located at our St. Louis office. The role requires an attorney with knowledge of the insurance industry and a proven record of successfully handling complex legal and compliance matters within heavily regulated industries. This person will possess strong judgment, work with an appropriate sense of urgency and provide proactive, business-focused counsel to the Life Division of Kemper. Responsibilities include coordinating, directing and advising on Market Conduct Exams; managing the Regulatory Change Management and Compliance Monitoring processes; overseeing consumer and department of insurance complaint process; monitoring and implementing insurance laws, regulation and guidance; providing legal advice on all aspects of the life insurance business including the design, sale and administration of life and other insurance policies and agent and distribution matters; providing proactive and timely legal counsel in support of strategic and tactical business initiatives; identifying and mitigating risk to Company by providing relevant counsel and effective business-focused solutions; building and maintaining relationships with regulators and industry stakeholders; supporting business partners in finding legally compliant solutions to challenging business problems; developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with management and internal business clients, agents, outside counsel and Company partners to gain a deep understanding of the Company’s business, challenges, risks and opportunities; preparing various regulatory filings and drafting policy forms. Qualifications include Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from ABA-accredited institution and member in good standing of the Missouri Bar (or equivalent); four or more years of combined law firm and in-house legal experience; experience in insurance industry, life insurance a plus; demonstrated experience interacting with state insurance regulators to resolve issues and meet company objectives; superior verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; results driven with strong business acumen possessing the ability to influence others; ability to work collaboratively across all levels of the organization and the flexibility to adapt to and lead through change; strong intellectual curiosity and a positive attitude.
