Summary

Job Summary

The department of Student Legal Services encourages applications for the temporary Staff Attorney role! This role is responsible for advising students about their individual personal legal problems in certain specified areas of the law. The Staff Attorney also represents student clients in court on minor cases, and, when necessary, advocates for them at trial and other proceedings. The Staff Attorney assists with administrative tasks around the office in support of the Student Legal Services' mission.

Student Legal Services

Student Legal Services is a small law office dedicated to serving the legal needs of CU Boulder students. Their mission is to help students resolve or minimize their legal situations, so they can focus on school. This is done by providing high-quality legal services to them through an easily accessible program that is responsive to their needs as clients and respectful of them as people. Staff also strive to educate students about their rights and responsibilities and about the legal system through consultations and outreach efforts so that they can avoid legal problems in the future.

Legal Consultation

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Interviewing students about their legal situation
  • Reviewing related documents
  • Counseling students on their legal options

Representation Of Student Clients

  • Reviewing discovery
  • Investigating cases
  • Researching legal issues
  • Negotiating with opposing counsel for favorable case resolutions
  • Appearing in court or at other proceedings

Administrative Work

  • Answering phones
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Greeting walk-ins
  • Assessing eligibility for student intake

Continuing Legal Education

  • Attending substantive and ethical education courses as required to maintain attorney licensure

Trial Work

  • Preparing cases and witnesses for trial
  • Advocating for clients at trial

What You Should Know

  • This position is a temporary role that we anticipate could last up to 4 months. The role will primarily be in person either on campus or attending court and offsite meetings with clients as needed. Hours may fluctuate week to week depending on the team needs.

What We Can Offer

  • The hourly rate for this position is $42.24 per hour.

Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave .

What We Require

  • Colorado law license

What We Would Like You To Have

  • Experience in landlord-tenant law
  • Experience in consumer, debtor counseling/bankruptcy
  • Experience in criminal/traffic law
  • Experience with university disciplinary proceedings and trials
  • Significant criminal trial experience particularly important
