Position Description
The Employment Counsel at Applied Medical provides critical legal support on a wide range of employment-related matters, ensuring compliance and mitigating risk across the organization. This role partners closely with internal business groups and leadership to deliver expert guidance on labor and employment law, workplace investigations, and policy development. By leveraging deep knowledge of state and federal employment regulations, the Employment Counsel helps maintain a compliant, ethical, and collaborative work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel on employment law matters, including litigation, compliance, and workers’ compensation claims.
- Draft and review legal documents, policies, and agreements related to employment issues.
- Advise management and Team Member Relations on labor and employment topics such as wage and hour compliance, leaves of absence, EEO compliance, and workplace investigations.
- Offer training and guidance to internal teams on employment law, risk management, and compliance best practices.
- Research and update policies based on new or pending federal and state legislation.
- Identify and recommend proactive solutions to minimize legal risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Manage external legal counsel on employment-related disputes and litigation.

- Ensure compliance with California and U.S. labor and employment laws across all business functions.
- Build strong partnerships with leadership and internal teams to provide timely, practical legal advice.
- Drive risk mitigation strategies that protect the organization and support team member relations.
- Deliver clear, actionable guidance that enables informed decision-making and fosters a positive workplace culture.
- Manage complex legal matters efficiently while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Position Requirements
This position requires the following skills and attributes:
- Hold a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school with strong academic credentials.
- Maintain admission to the California Bar or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in California.
- Demonstrate a minimum of five years of California employment law experience, including handling disputes, discrimination and harassment claims, wage and hour issues, and wrongful termination cases.
- Show thorough knowledge of state and federal labor and employment laws and regulations.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills to advise leadership and senior management effectively.
- Apply strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Uphold high ethical standards and maintain confidentiality in all matters.
- Collaborate effectively in a team environment and build relationships across all levels of the organization.
Preferred
The following skills and attributes are preferred:
- Prior in-house counsel experience in a corporate environment.
- Familiarity with compliance training development and delivery.
- Experience managing external legal counsel and complex litigation.
- Ability to develop innovative solutions for emerging employment law challenges.
