Patent Attorney – Associate (Chemical Engineering)

Overview

We are seeking an associate-level Patent Attorney with 3–5 years of experience and a strong background in Chemical Engineering to join our team. The ideal candidate will work closely with inventors and clients across a range of industries to protect cutting-edge technologies through high-quality patent prosecution and related IP services.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications, with an emphasis on chemical, materials, and process-based technologies
  • Conduct invention disclosures and collaborate with inventors to develop patent strategies aligned with business goals
  • Respond to Office Actions and communicate with patent examiners
  • Perform freedom-to-operate, patentability, and validity analyses
  • Assist with IP due diligence, portfolio management, and strategic counseling
  • Support patent litigation matters, post-grant proceedings, and licensing efforts as needed
  • Stay current on developments in patent law and relevant technologies

Technical Focus Areas (may include)

  • Chemical processes and formulations
  • Materials science and polymers
  • Specialty chemicals and industrial chemistry
  • Energy, catalysis, or electrochemical systems
  • Pharmaceuticals, biotech, or chemical manufacturing (as applicable)

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Admission to at least one U.S. state bar (or eligibility to waive in)
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • 3–5 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably at a law firm or in-house IP department
  • Strong technical writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple matters and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Chemical Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience with international patent prosecution
  • Exposure to IP strategy, portfolio development, or client counseling
  • Prior experience working directly with corporate or research clients
