Microsoft is looking for a skilled attorney to join our Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) team as the Principal Corporate Counsel for Privacy Advocacy and Regulatory Affairs (PARA). PARA is responsible for advancing Microsoft’s data protection and privacy strategy by engaging with engineering and business groups internally and regulators, customers, and other stakeholders externally; developing and maintaining the Microsoft Privacy Standard; and contributing to core governance and compliance functions.

- Contribute as a member of the team responsible for guidance on data protection and privacy regulation issues.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including engineering and business counterparts.
- Execute against PARA’s strategic vision that aligns with Microsoft’s values, objectives, and business priorities.
- Provide legal and policy guidance to product teams, marketing, sales, and other business groups on privacy issues, including novel and emerging topics.
- Facilitate compliance with privacy laws and regulations, as well as the Microsoft Privacy Standard.
- Support PARA’s operations, processes, and tools, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies where appropriate.
- Contribute to a culture of collaboration, learning, diversity, and inclusion within PARA and across CELA.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree AND 4+ years experience as a practicing attorney
- OR equivalent experience.
- Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
Preferred Qualifications
- Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree AND 5+ years experience as a practicing attorney
- OR equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of relevant experience in law and policy, preferably in a global context.
- 3+ years experience as an attorney in specialized practice area (e.g., tax, employment, copyright).
- 1+ year(s) in-house counsel experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in data protection and privacy, with a deep understanding of the interplay between data protection, privacy, and other regulatory domains, including cybersecurity, digital safety, responsible AI, accessibility, and market regulation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to persuade, influence, and build trust with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, including the ability to anticipate and navigate complex and evolving regulatory environments.
- Deep understanding of Microsoft products and advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence.
- Passion for Microsoft’s mission and values.
Legal Counsel IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $132,200 - $232,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,800 - $248,600 per year.
