Posted Mar 30 The Legal Counsel – Litigation & Compliance will assist the Associate General Counsel/Director of Transactions and Litigation oversee the Company’s U.S. litigation portfolio, including toxic tort, non-employment class actions, commercial, and other complex litigation, and provide strategic legal leadership across a broad and evolving compliance landscape. This team member will direct outside counsel and be accountable for case strategy, risk evaluation, cost control, and executive-level reporting. In addition, this role will advise and counsel company executives, business units, and teams across the enterprise across diverse compliance and regulatory matters across the enterprise. This team member will drive development and implementation of compliance best practices as they assist cross-functional teams in developing and implementing standards, policies, procedures, training, and initiatives and partner with stakeholders to conduct risk, impact, and similar assessments. This position plays a critical role in protecting the Company’s financial position, operational integrity, and brand reputation.
Essential Job Functions
Litigation Oversight & Strategic Management
Assist Associate General Counsel/Director of Transactions and Litigation oversee a national portfolio of complex civil litigation matters.
Develop and implement cohesive litigation strategies across all the jurisdictions where the Company operates.
Direct and manage outside counsel, including evaluation of pleadings, discovery plans, expert strategy, dispositive motion practice, and trial posture.
Assess exposure, recommend reserves, and advise on settlement strategy or alternative dispute resolution.
Identify trends and systemic risks; partner with business leaders to mitigate recurring exposure.
Oversee litigation budgets and implement cost-containment strategies.
Coordinate with Risk Management and insurance carriers regarding coverage and reporting.
Compliance Leadership
Provide advice and counsel across a broad range of regulatory and compliance matters, which may include:
Environmental and EPR obligations
Weights and measures compliance
Employment-related regulatory matters
Consumer protection and product compliance issues
Monitor and analyze emerging regulatory developments at the state and federal level and advise senior leadership on potential for enterprise impact, compliance obligations, and risk mitigation strategies.
Support development, refinement, and implementation of compliance policies and internal controls for operations across multiple jurisdictions (local, state, and federal).
Coordinate with counsel in Canada and Mexico to ensure alignment and appropriate handling of cross-boarder regulatory matters affecting corporate operations.
Partner with operational and functional leaders to proactively identify systemic compliance risks and embed practical, risk-based compliance processes into business operations.
Executive & Cross-Functional Partnership
Translate complex legal risk into clear, actionable guidance for business partner stakeholders.
Provide concise and strategic reporting to senior leadership.
Support enterprise risk management initiatives.
Drive alignment between legal strategy and broader company objectives.

Skills/Education/Experience
Required:
JD from an ABA accredited law school
Active membership in good standing with at least one State Bar
8+ years of legal experience, at least 5 of which includes experience in:
Complex civil litigation or commercial litigation, including first chair trial experience.
Regulatory compliance applicable to retail operations in one or more of the following areas: environmental, consumer protection, product, benefits, labor and employment, and marketing.
Strong analytical, problem solving, and evaluation skills
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Strong legal acumen with the ability to demonstrate sound judgment
Willingness to tackle matters in and outside areas of expertise with a can-do attitude, understanding that no job is too big or too small
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with business teams and other legal counsel
Ability to self-start, manage and prioritize tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced, and often deadline-driven environment and adapt quickly to changing priorities and legal and regulatory environments
Excellent negotiation skills
Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy

In-house legal experience within a retail, distribution, or consumer products environment
