What You'll Do
Lead and strengthen a school-wide compliance program
- Develop and coordinate a comprehensive compliance program that integrates and elevates existing unit/department efforts across education, research, and patient care.
- Build dashboards and reporting tools to track compliance and risk trends, training completion, audit outcomes, and corrective actions; share actionable insights with senior leadership.
- Convene and facilitate a school-wide compliance committee to monitor emerging requirements and support implementation of recommendations.
Policy, training, and partnership-building
- Lead school-wide policy processes - drafting, reviewing, and updating policies and procedures spanning research, clinical operations, risk management, student affairs, IT, finance, facilities, and HR.
- Design, deliver, and evaluate compliance education and training (orientation, ongoing awareness, and targeted programs) for faculty, staff, and students.
- Support implementation of Nepotism, Conflict of Interest (CoI), and Conflict of Commitment (CoC) policies, including managing related reviews and investigations as needed.
- Map and improve workflows to identify compliance gaps and develop practical corrective and preventive strategies.
- Serve as a primary liaison with key university partners (e.g., Research Ethics & Compliance Office, Risk Management, Internal Audit, HR, Michigan Medicine).
- Consult with the Office of General Counsel and other university experts on complex legal and regulatory matters.
Risk management, monitoring, and investigations
- Identify and assess compliance risks; develop and implement corrective action plans.
- Evaluate concerns and lead or recommend investigations into potential policy or regulatory violations; document findings and track follow-through.
- Oversee periodic audits related to access to sensitive data, spaces, and information systems; prepare written audit and annual compliance reports.
- Monitor adherence to requirements such as HIPAA privacy/security, CLERY Act, Culture of Respect expectations, and other university compliance training/standards.
- Support compliance in research and teaching laboratories, including safety, ethical, and federal requirements.
- Supervise annual and ad hoc COI disclosure and management processes for faculty, staff, and students.
Additional Contributions
- Serve as a trusted resource for faculty, staff, students, and patients on compliance and ethical practices.
- Develop and maintain compliance manuals, handbooks, and online resources.
- Represent the school on relevant university, regional, and national committees/workgroups.
- Participate in the School's annual Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship (RCRS) course in coordination with the Office of Research.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., law, healthcare, public administration, business, research administration, or related area). Advanced degree (Master's/JD or equivalent) preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in compliance, regulatory affairs, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of regulatory and policy frameworks relevant to higher education and clinical/research environments (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, and related standards).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, including comfort presenting to senior leaders.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across complex, decentralized organizations.
- Experience developing and implementing compliance programs, tools, or initiatives.
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience in an academic health center, clinical environment, or dental/medical setting.
- Familiarity with external accreditation processes and requirements.
- Professional certification such as CCEP (or similar).

Modes of Work

Additional Information
We are committed to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for everyone. As part of the onboarding process, all candidates are required to submit their immunization records to Occupational Health Services (OHS) prior to their appointment start date to verify their immunization status. The process includes completing a two-step TB test for all new hires and providing proof of Hepatitis B immunization for clinic-facing roles. Additional immunizations may be necessary based on public health guidance or specific job responsibilities.
Reporting & Collaboration
This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean and operates with a high degree of autonomy, partnering regularly with school leadership (including the Dean, department chairs, associate/assistant deans, CIO, and directors). The Compliance Manager may oversee and/or coordinate the work of committee members, interns, or project leads.
Compensation: Commensurate with experience; eligible for University benefits
Background Screening
