The Role
As Production Counsel, Scripted Business & Legal Affairs (Contract Position for 6-9 months), you will be a key team member responsible for handling production legal matters for a scripted broadcast television show. This position requires a collaborative team player and business minded lawyer who possesses good common sense and judgment, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a desire to contribute proactively to the department. This position requires a licensed attorney with extensive experience in handling a wide range of production legal affairs and drafting of a multitude of agreements, including longform agreements.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and draft the full scope of television production agreements.
- Collaborate with outside labor counsel and labor unions to submit necessary paperwork and ensure compliance in scripted television production.
- Manage relationships with external production legal counsel and vendor, location, and talent representatives.
- Working collaboratively with EVP and VP in Scripted group to help implement policies and practices for the show.
- Partnering with financial, creative, and production departments to analyze talent and other business deals.
- Oversee the negotiation and drafting of all agreements and documents for the production, e.g. talent, vendor, below-the-line, graphics, equipment rental, casting, composer, parking, and location agreements.
- Provide legal counsel and interface regularly with production management of Fremantle show in production, including with respect to clearance matters and post-production/distribution matters.
- Handle other general business and legal affairs matters as needed.
- Provide business advice and legal counsel and interface regularly with scripted creative and production executives.
Essential Skills and Experience
- J.D. from an ABA accredited law school and membership in good standing of the California state bar.
- 7+ years of experience as an attorney in the entertainment industry with law firm, studio, network, and/or production company.
- Proven experience closing deals in a timely manner with respect to production agreements, and familiarity with customary conditions, obligations, and restrictions arising from such agreements.
- Minimum 5 years or more of experience independently handling production legal affairs in the entertainment industry including broad and in-depth knowledge of scripted television.
- Oversight and knowledge of development and production legal and guild issues required.
- Superior drafting and negotiating skills, including drafting longform agreements.
- Independent problem-solving and effective multi-tasking capabilities.
- Ability to thrive in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to deal sensitively with confidential material and exercise discretion.
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced, creative environment and manage a high volume of agreements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
The pay rate for this position is between $12,500-$15,000/month.
