Here, your voice and ideas matter, your work makes an impact, and together, you will help us define the future of American Express.    The General Counsel’s Organization   The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) of American Express is where great legal minds influence global business strategy. The GCO mission is to protect and strengthen American Express through legal expertise and strategic advice that helps business partners manage risk, identify opportunities, and deliver on the company’s promise of exceptional products and services.    U.S. Co-Brand Partnerships Counsel   The U.S. Consumer, Digital Labs and Strategic Partnerships team of the General Counsel’s Organization is seeking a Director & Counsel attorney to provide key legal support to the Cobrand teams within U.S. Consumer Services and Global Commercial Services on strategic co-branded credit card partnerships and other related initiatives. The position will work closely with business clients and legal professionals in the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) to provide legal advice on a wide range of strategic long-term partnership transactions and co-branded credit card product-related issues.   Responsibilities:  

  • Serve as a strategic advisor and provide legal advice to business clients on a broad spectrum of consumer and small business co-brand partnerships and product development initiatives
  • Draft and negotiate co-branded credit card program agreements, card marketing agreements, and other complex partnership agreements
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to product owners responsible for co-branded consumer and small business credit cards on a range of matters, including card marketing and acquisition, card member communications, new product development, rewards programs, and partnership-facing matters such as remuneration, exclusivity, and program funding
  • Bring a thoughtful, pragmatic legal perspective into discussions with business partners through the cobrand partnership lifecycle, including RFPs, execution of new or amended co-branded program agreements, and portfolio exits
  • Partner with Line of Business Compliance, Risk, Finance, Privacy, Credit and Fraud Risk, Global Marketing and Operational Excellence teams to structure, negotiate and launch cobrand partnerships and related products
  • Develop regulatory subject matter expertise across U.S. consumer finance regulations, with a particular emphasis on Truth in Lending Act and UDAAP
  • Generate buy-in and develop strategic partnerships through relationship-building and effective communication with stakeholders across the cobrand business teams

Minimum Qualifications:   

  • Bachelor’s degree & J.D.
  • Qualified to practice law in New York
  • 5+ years of relevant in-house and/or law firm experience
  • Experience drafting and negotiating complex transactional agreements

Preferred Qualifications:    

  • Strong transactional experience and demonstrated capacity to manage large-scale strategic negotiations with multiple stakeholders
  • Understanding of how legal issues intersect with business objectives and ability to present advice with business grounding
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to generate creative and innovative solutions to client issues
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both written and oral format, including drafting complex governance or financial structures with clarity
  • Demonstrated curiosity towards and capacity to learn new areas of law and transaction structures
  • Excellent collaboration, interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to build relationships of trust and proactively partner with others to drive results
  • Capacity to be agile and pivot appropriately when challenged with new information or evolving circumstances
  • Self-motivated, high level of personal energy and commitment

 

Salary Range: $144,250.00 to $256,250.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
