
Litigation Attorney (In-House)

Posted Jul 06 Full TimeOn SiteBirmingham, Michigan We are seeking an experienced Litigation Attorney to join our in-house legal team. This position is responsible for managing a diverse caseload of liability matters, including property damage, premises liability, subrogation, and other third-party claims. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with internal business partners and manage matters, mitigate legal risk, promote compliance, manage litigation and support the Company's goals.
Essential Responsibilities
Legal Advice & Strategy
- Provide timely and practical legal advice regarding general liability matters.
- Evaluate legal exposure and provide risk assessments to internal stakeholders.
- Advise business partners on risk management practices and legal compliance.
Litigation Management
- Manage general liability matters through all stages of pre-litigation and litigation, from inception through resolution.
- Serve as the primary liaison with outside counsel, overseeing litigation strategy, budgets, and case outcomes.
- Participate in mediations, depositions, settlement conferences, hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings as business needs require.
Claims Review & Investigation
- Review incident reports and assist with internal investigations.
- Coordinate with Risk Management, Human Resources, Operations, and other departments to gather and preserve relevant information.
- Analyze claims trends and recommend strategies to reduce future risk.
Contract Review & Insurance Coordination
- Review indemnification, liability, and insurance provisions in commercial agreements.
- Coordinate with insurance carriers and brokers regarding coverage, reporting obligations, and claims administration.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with applicable insurance policy requirements.
Training & Compliance
- Assist in developing and delivering training related to liability prevention and legal compliance.
- Monitor developments in applicable laws and regulations and advise internal stakeholders regarding potential business impacts.
Qualifications
Required:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law and good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
- Substantial experience handling civil litigation matters, generally acquired through approximately five (5) or more years of legal practice, including meaningful experience in general liability litigation in either a law firm or in-house legal department.
- Demonstrated knowledge of tort law, litigation practice and procedure, insurance, and risk management.
- Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple complex matters independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues and business partners.
Preferred :
- Experience serving as in-house counsel with a corporate legal department.
- Experience managing civil litigation involving general liability claims.
- Experience working with self-insured programs or captive insurance structures.
- Familiarity with legal and regulatory issues affecting the construction industry.
Work Environment
This position may require attendance at mediations, depositions, hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings, as well as occasional travel consistent with business needs.
