Product Counsel, Payments (Contract) Location: Remote (United States) Hours: 40 hours per week Duration: 6 months (Starting on or around August 24) Compensation: $100–$120/hour

Overview Legal.io is seeking an experienced Product Counsel to support a leading global technology company’s Payments Platform and Financial Integrity teams.

This role will provide day-to-day legal guidance on payments infrastructure, financial regulations, fraud prevention, and payment product development. The successful candidate will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Risk, Policy, and Commercial teams to help launch and scale payment solutions while navigating complex global regulatory frameworks.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with a strong background in fintech, payments, or financial services who enjoys working at the intersection of product development, regulation, and emerging technology.

Key Responsibilities

• Advise on payment infrastructure, local payment methods, and payment partner integrations across multiple jurisdictions
• Provide legal guidance on payment regulations, financial integrity, fraud prevention, and chargeback management
• Counsel cross-functional teams on payment product development and regulatory compliance
• Advise on payments data usage, privacy considerations, data retention, and applicable security frameworks, including PCI-DSS and GDPR
• Support payout operations, including payment method expansion, currency considerations, and cross-border regulatory requirements
• Partner with commercial legal teams on payment processor, financial institution, and third-party vendor agreements
• Translate complex financial regulatory requirements into practical, business-oriented legal advice
• Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Partnerships, Compliance, Risk, and Policy stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (or equivalent international qualification)
• 5+ years of legal experience with significant exposure to payments, fintech, financial services, or financial regulatory matters
• Experience advising on payment processing, payment infrastructure, or financial technology products
• Familiarity with card network rules, payment processors, and modern payment ecosystems
• Experience counseling technology companies on product-integrated legal and regulatory issues
• Strong analytical, drafting, negotiation, and communication skills
• Ability to independently manage multiple complex matters across a broad range of stakeholders

Preferred Experience

• In-house experience supporting fintech or technology companies
• Experience advising on global payment products and cross-border regulatory frameworks
• Familiarity with PCI-DSS, GDPR, payment privacy issues, and financial crime prevention
• Experience supporting product counseling within highly regulated technology environments
