Whistler Partners is working with a leading global law firm looking to add a Legal Engineering Attorney to its Technology & Information Services team. This is a rare opportunity for a lawyer who wants to work directly on the next generation of legal services: building AI-native systems that turn elite legal judgment into structured, repeatable, machine-executable workflows. The role sits at the intersection of legal practice, AI, knowledge management, workflow design, and product thinking. The ideal candidate is a lawyer with real legal practice experience and hands-on experience operationalizing legal expertise into prompts, schemas, playbooks, evaluations, and AI-driven workflows.

The firm is looking for someone who can take complex transactional, litigation, and advisory workflows and break them into discrete, measurable tasks that can be executed, reviewed, and improved through AI systems. That means translating practice group playbooks, negotiation positions, drafting conventions, matter data, precedent language, and senior lawyer judgment into structured artifacts that actually work in production. For a lawyer who understands both legal work and AI systems, this is a standout seat. You will be helping design how sophisticated legal work gets delivered at scale inside one of the world’s most advanced law firm environments. This is a strong fit for someone who has practiced law, understands the nuance of high-end legal work, and wants to build the systems that make legal expertise more usable, consistent, and scalable.

Key Responsibilities

• Design AI-native legal systems, workflows, prompts, schemas, evaluation suites, and playbooks.
• Break complex legal workflows into structured tasks with clear inputs, outputs, decision points, and quality criteria.
• Re-engineer manual legal workflows for AI-first execution.
• Determine appropriate work allocation, review gates, escalation points, and exception handling.
• Translate practice group playbooks, checklists, negotiation positions, and house style into structured artifacts.
• Codify senior practitioner knowledge, including fallback positions, market terms, drafting conventions, and negotiation flexibility.
• Author schema specifications and JSON Schemas for deal types, clause libraries, document attributes, and matter metadata.
• Curate precedent matters, exemplars, and work product into reference packs for prompting, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
• Design evaluation rubrics and structured quality measurement systems for AI outputs.
• Work closely with attorneys, technology teams, practice leaders, and innovation stakeholders.
• Protect confidential, privileged, financial, and proprietary information.

About You

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Minimum of 3 years of substantive legal practice experience at a law firm or in-house legal department.
• Minimum of 2 years of full-time experience as a Legal Engineer, Legal Knowledge Engineer, Legal Workflow Engineer, Innovation Attorney, or similar legal AI / legal operations role.
• Experience owning complex transactional, litigation, or advisory matters.
• Hands-on experience authoring, evaluating, and iterating prompts for large language models in legal workflows.
• Working proficiency with structured data formats, including JSON, JSON Schema, YAML, and Markdown.
• Ability to understand schemas, enumerations, conditional logic, and structured workflow design.
• Experience designing evaluation rubrics, golden datasets, head-to-head comparisons, and error taxonomies.
• Experience at a legal AI company, law firm innovation team, ALSP, or software company building tools for lawyers preferred.
• Hands-on experience designing or evaluating AI-driven legal workflows or agents preferred.
• Strong legal judgment, writing ability, technical curiosity, and communication skills.

Compensation

Expected salary range: $220,000–$250,000, with bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefits package.
