Overview Whistler Partners is working with a high-growth AI company in San Francisco looking to hire its first senior legal anchor. This is a broad, business-facing legal role for an attorney who can operate across privacy, commercial transactions, corporate structuring, employment, international expansion, and emerging regulatory issues. The company is looking for someone who can synthesize legal questions across disciplines and turn them into practical business guidance. This is not a role for someone who wants a narrow legal lane. The right person will be a true multi-practice attorney: comfortable getting into the substance, developing a point of view, managing outside counsel intelligently, and helping the business move quickly without creating unnecessary process.

Why This Role? This is the kind of in-house role that does not come with a playbook. The company is still early enough that the legal function has to be built with judgment, flexibility, and taste. The legal questions are broad, the business is moving quickly, and leadership needs someone who can be in the room for real decisions — not just route issues to outside counsel. The successful candidate will advise on privacy, commercial structures, international issues, employment matters, contractor-related risk, and evolving regulatory questions. They will also help build the internal legal infrastructure the company needs as it scales. There is meaningful room for growth. This person could develop into the General Counsel role over time, or become the company’s core legal leader while the organization continues to mature. For a lawyer who wants ownership, proximity to founders, and a front-row seat at an ambitious AI company, this is a very strong seat.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary day-to-day legal partner to company leadership.
  • Advise across privacy, commercial transactions, corporate and international structuring, employment, and regulatory issues.
  • Translate complex legal questions into practical commercial recommendations.
  • Support legal and business planning across multiple international markets.
  • Lead and synthesize work from specialized outside counsel.
  • Develop a substantive point of view on issues rather than simply project-managing law firms.
  • Partner with leadership on evolving commercial structures and related legal implications.
  • Evaluate employment-related issues, including contractor relationships and classification risk.
  • Build internal legal infrastructure, processes, guidelines, and judgment as the company scales.
  • Help the business identify and manage risk without slowing down a fast-moving organization.

About You

  • J.D. required.
  • Senior-level legal experience, ideally across technology, AI, privacy, commercial, regulatory, employment, or corporate matters.
  • Experience in-house at a fast-growing technology company strongly preferred.
  • Law firm experience is helpful, especially with strong foundational training.
  • Comfort operating across multiple legal disciplines.
  • Ability to understand the substance of unfamiliar legal issues quickly.
  • Strong judgment on when to own an issue internally and when to bring in specialists.
  • Experience managing outside counsel without becoming merely a pass-through.
  • Commercial instincts and ability to advise leadership in real time.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, speed, and evolving business models.
  • Interest in AI and the legal questions created by fast-moving technology companies.
  • Low-ego, entrepreneurial, highly adaptable, and practical.

TL;DR High-growth AI company in San Francisco hiring a Head of Legal to serve as its senior legal anchor. Broad role across privacy, commercial, international, employment, corporate, and regulatory issues. Strong fit for an entrepreneurial lawyer who wants founder exposure, meaningful equity, real ownership, and the chance to help build the legal function from the ground up.
