Meet Our Team
Legal.io's team includes graduates from some of the best universities around the world, individuals with
top-flight legal experience both in-house and at international law firms, and engineers with decades of
practice building secure platforms that serve millions.
President & COO, CO-Founder
Pieter is responsible for operations and product development. In 2015, he was selected as one of Forbes 30 under 30 for Law & Policy.
He studied law in Ghent and Stanford and gained experience as a technology lawyer in the Brussels office of the law firm DLA Piper, where he represented businesses, government as well as pro bono clients.
Pieter serves as the lynchpin in the organization, able to communicate and coordinate across product design, engineering and the needs of customers.
Pieter also champions the study of legal technology by law students through various teaching activities.
Tony is a graduate of Oxford University and Stanford Law School, and gained a broad range of legal experience advising the technology, communications and media industries in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Tony shares with Pieter, and the Legal.io team, a clear understanding of how the legal services market operates and a vision for how it can be disrupted, for the better, with user-centered design and the latest technologies.
Tony’s best memories as a lawyer come from pro bono work advising the social enterprise arm of Barnardo's, a UK children's charity, from its formation through to the development of several social ventures.
Daniel is responsible for engineering and related matters and has been working on computers since the Apple IIe.
He has worked at many startups from PictureTrail, one of the early photo sharing platforms, to RottenTomatoes, SlideShare, and Ampush Media.
Daniel brings a wealth of development and engineering management experience and expertise. Having already built secure, trusted platforms used by millions of people, he is now relishing the challenge of building systems and algorithms that can marshal the Big Data being generated every day within the legal system.
Van has more than 30 years of experience in the technology industry. Van was VP, Deputy General Counsel, for Cisco for 18 years. She’s credited for playing a critical role in building a world-class legal department from the ground up and supported the company's growth from less than $2B to $50B. Her current activities include working with entrepreneurs and start-ups to help grow their business. She also coaches in-house legal executives and law-firm partners.
Van has substantial transactional and operational experience having led many diverse functions at Cisco, including product development and licensing, M&A, and strategic alliances. She was involved in over 70 acquisitions and investments for Cisco.
Van is known for her innovation and leadership of technology solutions for the legal profession. She was instrumental in developing many of the first online legal applications. She was also the visionary behind the creation of the “Virtual Pro Bono Clinic” using on-line collaboration technology to provide free legal services to people with moderate means.
Van is the recipient of multiple awards, including Business Trailblazer, Woman of Influence, Lady Justice Innovator, Community Champion, and Women of Achievement. Van lives in Silicon Valley. She enjoys running marathons, playing the piano, gardening, painting, and cooking.
