About You and this Role

In this important role, you will partner closely with key business functions, including marketing, sales and engineering, HR, and IT and provide direct counsel to business teams and executives. Your challenging goal is to find feasible solutions for the business while supporting the implementation of globally consistent and world class compliance processes. This includes both participation in the design and strategy processes and assisting the stakeholders with the commercial legal and privacy aspects of their procurement activities. In this context you will also provide guidance and training to further the goals of our global data protection and privacy strategy and compliance program. As part of the global Legal team you will work on the interface between more specialized commercial and privacy professionals. As the company continues to grow we expect that you will get the possibility to either direct your career into senior specialist positions or to assume key responsibilities in the implementation of a global procurement function. You’ll get an opportunity to gain meaningful familiarity with Liferay's global business and the legal aspects of many key technology trends.

You’ll help Liferay achieve our goals in the areas of data protection and privacy and maintain continued growth as a global leader in open source enterprise solutions. You’ll work as part of a team of senior legal professionals to advance and support Liferay’s growth strategy and excellent corporate governance around the globe.

In order to facilitate transatlantic collaboration in particular with the EMEA region and some periodic in-person training, collaboration and team building the preferred location for this position would be in the Raleigh, NC area. For particularly qualified candidates we will also consider the possibility of working entirely remotely from other regions.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders on both contractual and privacy procurement matters;
  • In collaboration with the respective business departments, record new processing activities resulting from the use of new technologies and services
  • Provide strategic and tactical compliance counsel to internal stakeholders regarding procurement of new technologies and services in support of our data protection and privacy compliance program, including continued compliance with GDPR, CCPA, LGPD and other international privacy frameworks based on a thorough understanding of such frameworks, industry standards and related enforcement actions;
  • Provide strategic and tactical compliance counsel to internal business customers to identify and address implications of the new procurement initiatives on Liferay’s products and services and collaborate with the peers in the Legal Department and Privacy Office to take any steps required
  • Assist Privacy Office in the continuous enhancement of our vendor management processes;
  • Promote the importance of and educate internal customers about the vendor review process;
  • Collaborate with IT security team in security incident response planning, management, and remediation.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Supporting the continuous improvement of standard form agreements, playbooks, contract templates, and legal processes;
  • Collaborate with commercial legal team in addressing data protection and privacy topics both outbound with customers and partners and inbound with our procurement team and vendors;
  • Conducting legal research;
  • Managing and coordinating legal matters handled by outside counsel;
  • Improving communication in order to ensure timely and comprehensive information of specialist departments about the work of the legal department.
  • Promote the importance of a solid ethical culture and awareness of our compliance program, provide regular updates to senior management, and lead or support other ethics and compliance initiatives as necessary

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced understanding of applicable data protection and privacy laws as they apply to Liferay in particular in the U.S.A is a must, solid understanding of international privacy frameworks for example in the EU or Brazil are highly desired. CIPP or equivalent certifications are a plus;
  • Substantial understanding of contract law in the area of IP and IT;
  • Experience in working with data protection compliance software programs is a plus;
  • Generally requires 2-5 years of applicable in-house or law firm experience, demonstrated success in in-house environments is preferred;
  • License to practice law in at least one major international jurisdiction is preferred; Additional qualifications in additional jurisdictions or extensive international work experience is strongly desired;
  • Professional fluency and ability to draft policies and negotiate agreements in English is a must, professional fluency in additional languages is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing and managing compliance programs; understanding of risk assessment and third-party due diligence
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with all levels of our organization and external contacts and to work effectively in a professional team environment;
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills; sound judgment and ability to inspire and persuade others in a growing, global business;
  • Proactive approach to recognizing business and compliance needs, anticipating issues, and applying thorough and thoughtful analysis and exceptional sense of judgement in determining recommended steps and actions related to compliance matters.
