The Privacy Counsel as a member of Philips Central Legal Privacy Function is responsible for participating in the development of global Group-wide privacy and data protection principles, policies and practices as well as their implementation within a business group or function for our Products & Solutions

The Privacy Counsel is responsible for advising business group or function on legal and strategical matters surrounding privacy/data protection as well as for monitoring all relevant products, services, processes, solutions, systems and architecture to assure compliance with privacy and data protection laws. The Privacy Counsel will apply knowledge of international privacy laws and regulations to act as privacy legal consultant to the business or functional group. This position requires great judgment, very strong written and verbal communication skills, and great attention to detail.

You are responsible for

  • Act as privacy legal point of contact for the appropriate business and functional leaders and their teams and inform them of their privacy compliance obligations pursuant to Philips privacy policies and applicable data protection law.

  • Support the implementation of the Central Privacy Compliance Program to facilitate compliance of the relevant business or function assigned to you with Philips Privacy policy/standards and applicable data protection laws. Provide expert support and consultancy to promote and facilitate privacy compliance.

  • Implement oversee and monitor Central Privacy Compliance Program activities such as policies and procedures; standards; guidelines; and tools within the relevant business or function assigned to you. This also includes drafting and supporting the implementation of privacy notices, consent statements, data retention standards and other privacy compliance controls within your relevant business or function.

  • Identify personal data processing activities carried out by the relevant business or function assigned to you and execute privacy compliance assessments (when required). Maintain up to date processing registry (Controller and Processor) of the relevant business or function. Drive and embed privacy by design controls into the business processes, quality management systems, products and propositions of your relevant business or function.

  • Identify specific training needs - create (tailor) and deliver privacy training to the Responsible Executives (or their delegates) and to personnel of the relevant business or function with permanent or regular access to personal data or who is anyhow involved in the processing of personal data.

  • When required by internal standards/procedures, provide privacy legal support in the due diligence of third parties (such as when selecting third party Processors or during M&A transactions).

  • Act as Privacy Investigation Lead in response to potential personal data breaches per established protocol and documentation requirements.

  • Upon request, provide privacy compliance support for the fulfilment of data subject requests (or privacy-related complaints) related to the relevant business or function assigned to you.

  • Work effectively with any internal stakeholders necessary to fulfill the above tasks.

  • When needed, participate in the improvement of the Central Privacy Compliance Program by actively leading or working within a team project (e.g. for the implementation of a new privacy law in the relevant business or function assigned to you), providing feedback and/or recommending enhancements.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

  • Philips is looking for a qualified lawyer who has 5 + years’ experience within a legal or compliance role in the field of privacy and data protection.

  • Legal background required U.S. JD, EU LLB and/or LLM (bachelors/masters).

  • Certified International Privacy Professional Certification or equivalent preferred.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of EU and U.S. data protection regulatory requirements.

  • Ability to perform high-level work on a wide variety of data privacy matters and values teamwork and commitment. We expect you to be a team player who is determined to achieve high quality-oriented results.

  • You are able and willing to take rational but bold decisions under time pressure.

  • You are comfortable with complicated matters and able to work independently.

  • As you will be working closely together with colleagues from all parts of Philips globally, as well as with Philips in-house lawyers, external counsel, economists and regulators, excellent client management and communication skills in English is necessary. Ability to communicate in Dutch is a plus.

  • Results and customer oriented, organized, and able to prioritize, continuous improvement mindset.

  • Knowledge and understanding of technology-related law and clinical research

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Practical business judgment and ability to qualify actual practical risk.

  • Occasional travel to consult with internal or external customers.
