Litigation Paralegal I (remote or hybrid)

Summary: Performs legal support services under the supervision of an attorney. This position requires a person with independent thought, professional presentation, experience, and a bias for action. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and analytical skills, advanced technical skills, project coordination experience, and the ability to work well with both internal counsel and important external partners. This is a position in a developing department that will provide a rewarding challenge for the right candidate.

 

Organizational Relationships: The Paralegal/Legal Assistant reports to the Managing Attorney and Associate Attorney. This position has regular contact with the company’s executives, external partners, as well as all other company departments.

 

NOTE: This position is eligible for remote work after training is completed, in accordance with UPC’s Telecommuting / Remote Work Policy.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for various legal and business projects
  • Work with Counsel to draft and update discovery responses and pleadings.
  • Work with Counsel to draft and update Legal Procedures Manual.
  • Prepare responses to Subpoenas and Orders.
  • Prepare deposition notebooks.
  • Research legal issues.
  • Draft, transcribe, and/or edit correspondence and communication including letters, memoranda, emails, and reports.
  • Prepare invoices, reports, memos, letters, financial/travel expense statements, and other documents, using word prcoessing, web forms, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software.
  • Manage and maintain Counsel's schedule.
  • Manage travel arrangements for Counsel as requested.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • 0 to 3 years of substantive insurance defense/general liability litigation experience
  • Bachelors’ Degree Level or equivalent experience required
  • Paralegal certification a plus.

Required Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of all facets of litigation: case management, document review, filing pleadings, and trial preparation.
  • Proficiency in e-discovery and litigation support tools.
  • Experienced, well-organized, and independent.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent scheduling and calendar-keeping skills.
  • Must be a self-starter and team player
