SUMMARY:


NextGen America is seeking an Associate General Counsel to provide legal advice and guidance to staff around various legal and compliance issues. As a key member of the organization’s legal function, this role’s day to day duties will also include reviewing and drafting contracts, drafting legal memos and providing legal approvals for external communications. This position will report to the COO/General Counsel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advise NextGen staff on issues related to federal and state campaign finance law, voting rights, lobbying law, gift rules, and related topics
  • Review and revise NextGen’s public communications (including broadcast, digital, and print advertisements) to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations
  • Review and coordinate the filing of campaign finance and other compliance reports
  • Draft, negotiate, and review contracts with consultants, contractors, and vendors; leases for field offices; and related documents
  • Advise NextGen’s 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and Section 527 (PAC) organizations on IRS regulations, corporate compliance, and other issues related to corporate and non-profit law
  • Work with outside counsel as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • State and/or federal bar admission
  • At least 2-5 years of legal experience, preferably at a law firm doing non-profit or campaign finance compliance or at a non-profit organization
  • Strong research and writing skills, including ability to clearly communicate complex legal issues to a non-legal audience
  • Be a positive, collaborative team player that sets the tone for everyone to do their best work
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable working remotely in a highly collaborative distributed workforce setting

BONUS POINTS FOR:

  • Experience with election law, tax-exempt organizations, and/or other compliance work
  • Experience with electoral politics, policy advocacy, or government work
