Overview:

Paralegal


The primary responsibility of this role is to processes documents and reports for the General Counsel and Risk Manager. Performs administrative duties for the legal group. General areas of responsibility include Insurance, Corporate Governance, and Contracts.

Responsibilities:
  • Assists the GC with claims involving Commercial General Liability, Workers Compensation, Auto Liability, Inventory, Property, and other insurance policies.
  • Coordinates with insurance adjusters, insurance providers, and attorneys for legal and factual research, employee statements, medical records, corporate documentation, and other information as requested.
  • Complies with applicable company procedures and policies, statutes, regulations, and other legal requirements governing claims handling.
  • Processes all new complaints, subpoenas, and related litigation documents;
  • Maintains master complaint and claims logs;
  • Conducts various document searches and factual research. Create and maintain internal databases, run searches on internal and external document databases and systems, cull relevant information from a variety of resources such as newspapers, magazines, libraries, case documents and trade associations. Gather and analyze research data, such as statutes, decisions, legal articles, codes, and documents.
  • Assists the GC with developing and maintaining a Legal Matters Database and workflow for review of all corporate contracts and legal matters.
  • Creates and maintains electronic and hard copy files of all Legal department records.
  • Communicates and educates field and corporate management groups regarding legal and insurance-related matters.
  • Assists GC with drafting, reviewing, processing, and filing a variety of contract documents, including corporate, supply agreements, amendments, confidentiality agreements, commercial leases, and service agreements.
  • Acts as liaison among various internal departments as well as with outside agencies and companies. Oversee the progress of documents through litigation support departments, order transcripts from reporting services, and fulfill requests from outside counsel and others.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all matters.
  • Create and maintain routine, monthly and quarterly reports as requested by GC;
  • Create and maintain scheduling calendars for all insurance premiums, claims, litigation and corporate matters;
  • Assists in discovery data collection;
  • Schedule, prepares for and attends department meetings and hearings.
  • Process department purchase orders, invoices and other billing-related duties.
  • Maintains office supplies and orders appropriate supplies for Legal department.
  • Provide all other assistance as requested by GC.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or a bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in insurance claims processing strongly preferred, ideally including experience in paralegal process.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Excellent research, investigative and analytic skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
  • Great attention to detail and excellent editorial and proofreading skills
  • Familiarity with civil rules of procedure and court scheduling practices
  • General understanding of insurance policies and insurance claims processes
  • Capability to answer phones, schedule appointments and manage client requests;
  • Ability to take written minutes of meetings and prepare written summaries of events;
  • Ability to work independently, learn from prior experiences and anticipate the needs of the Legal team
  • The monitoring of and strict adherence to deadlines is essential, as is the ability to recognize when assistance is needed to meet those deadlines
  • SC notary certification or willingness and eligibility to become an SC notaryAbility to professionally and effectively communicate with executives, managers, employees, vendors and customers.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.


Working Conditions

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work primarily inside throughout the year.
  • Position requires business travel as needed, typically day trips.
