RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support a federal legal office
  • Examine, edit, prepare, and/or process various legal documents
  • Prepares, writes, and/or edits legal documents according to style and format guides
  • Review legal requests and determine how to respond, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, pleadings, subpoenas, etc.
  • Coordinate with outside attorneys, law enforcement agencies, courts, etc.
  • Prepare legal actions, e.g., complaints, correspondence, discovery requests, discovery responses, etc.
  • Assist attorneys during trial preparation
  • Compile trial notebooks, assemble jury instructions, compile witness and exhibit lists, etc.
  • Coordinates with the victim/witness specialist
  • Helps victim/witness specialist follow guidelines relating to victims’ rights and services responsibilities
  • Verify citations and statutory references
  • Ensure citations are complete and consistent with source material
  • Determine which matters should be referred to attorneys, and the urgency of the matter
  • Search legal reference to help attorneys to conduct interviews and prepare correspondence
  • Search database for required information
  • Assemble exhibits affidavits and other legal documents
  • Develop tables of contents and indices for briefs
  • List cited cases, opinions, and miscellaneous references in briefs
  • Compose original letters that do not require legal interpretations
  • Compose original letters that require a good working knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology
  • Receive visitors at the front desk
  • Answer telephone caller, route to the proper person, and/or take messages
  • Help maintain attorney calendars and track important dates and remind attorneys of schedule events, meetings, etc.
  • Edit documents for spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.
  • Perform docketing duties, e.g., opening, updating, and closing cases through use of an automated case tracking system
  • Organizes and adheres to appropriate guidelines regarding the purging and closing of both paper and electronic files.
  • Prepare requests for the obligation of funds for litigation expenses and monitors for continued necessity
  • Maintain calendar of assigned active cases
  • Track filing hearings, trial dates, conferences, interview, etc.
  • Arrange travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations
  • Prepare travel authorizations and vouchers


BACKGROUND

  • Progressive and relevant experience as legal assistant, paralegal, etc.
  • Ability to conduct legal research and analysis
  • Ability to prepare detailed legal documents and correspondence
  • Ability to collaborate with people in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Preference for knowledge of the litigation process, including court rules and procedures for prosecutions
  • Preference for experience with Eclipse, Case Map, Trial Director, or similar software products


EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Preference for paralegal certificate

Individual’s primary workstation is located in an office area. The noise level in this environment is low to moderate. Regularly required to sit for extended periods up to 80% of the time; frequently required to move about to access file cabinets and use office equipment such as PC, copier, fax, telephone, cell phone, etc. Occasionally required to reach overhead, bend, and lift objects of up to 10 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of the time.
