Microsoft has an immediate opportunity for a paralegal to join the Corporate External and Legal Affairs (CELA) team to provide legal support for Microsoft's industry-leading commercial business. The role will entail working closely with lawyers and business clients to support a variety of marketing, commercial transactions, strategies, business development opportunities as well as legal compliance initiatives.

The position is based in Redmond, Washington. Other locations may also be considered.

Responsibilities

Legal Knowledge and Support
  • Proactively supports attorneys and other department roles on routine and non-routine legal matters.
  • Maintains knowledge of the applicable legal framework (e.g., court rules, legal deadlines, patents), laws, regulations, and industry policies within department specialty area.
  • Drafts, processes, and/or reviews legal and other documents (e.g., contracts, applications) and correspondence for straightforward legal matters.
  • Reviews business materials (e.g., marketing collateral, proposals, requests for proposals) and programs for compliance with applicable laws and Microsoft internal policies.
  • Prepares reports and materials for department activities.
  • Requests materials from attorneys, clients, third parties, outside counsel, and/or company personnel.
  • Builds knowledge of Microsoft’s business, Legal and Corporate Affairs processes, and Microsoft policies.
Operational Excellence
  • Uses and maintains company tools, resources, databases, and processes related to one's practice area to efficiently achieve work objectives and recommends ways to improve efficiency.
  • Evaluates and prioritizes one's own work tasks and projects based on practice area goals and attorney input.
  • Works in alignment with priorities established for practice group.
  • Monitors timelines and schedules to ensure deadlines are met.
Client Counseling
  • Acts as the primary legal contact with assigned business clients and escalates issues to supervisor.
  • Makes recommendations and provides support to clients on basic legal matters based on understanding of the client's business and subject matter.
  • Participates in meetings with attorneys, business clients, and outside counsel at the direction of an attorney.
  • Prepares presentations and communicates with others across practice area to ensure consensus and a coordinated voice for client solutions.
  • Counsels clients and provides status updates on issues under the direction of the attorney.
  • Supports the attorney in developing solutions that enable clients to take action towards achieving business objectives.
 

Projects and Initiatives
  • Collaborates on and demonstrates accountability for achieving project goals within practice group and contributes to team projects outside of practice group.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree AND 1+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area OR 3+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree AND 3+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area.
  • 3+ years relevant in-house experience.
Ideal experience
  • Experience with information technology agreements is desirable
  • An awareness of and ability to apply principles of plain language and contract simplification
  • Familiarity with relevant legal issues such as intellectual property, data protection privacy law, competition law and imminent legislation is highly desirable
  • Experience in dealing with regulatory issues pertaining to software and cloud services in industries such as banking & financial services, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, etc.
