TikTok is the leading destination for short-form mobile video. Our mission is to inspire creativity and bring joy.
The Trust & Safety team at TikTok helps ensure that our global community is safe and empowered to create and enjoy content across all of our applications.
As the Global Issue Policy Lead for Minor Safety, you will be responsible for overseeing TikTok's global Minor Safety policy strategy and for managing a team of Issue Policy Managers based out of our Americas offices. This team designs and consults on the enforcement of TikTok's Trust & Safety policies that capture potential risks to youth, including but not limited to physical harm, psychological harm, developmental harm, and risk of exploitation. Your core responsibilities will be to contemplate policy standards that honor child and adolescent wellbeing, and to lead the policy strategy of a team of experts who specialize in nuanced issues of child safety. You will consider the complexity with which different global regions perceive appropriate youth entertainment experiences, and adjust policies accordingly.
As the Global Issue Policy Lead, you will be the company's internal lead of communication for all Minor Safety policy efforts and you will co-lead cross-functional conversations with your colleagues in Product & Process, Data Science, Product Feature, Legal, Public Policy, Communications, and more. This role requires generalized knowledge of core themes relevant to the adolescent experience: identity development, gender and sexuality, peer and family relationships, risk-taking behavior, etc.
What will I be doing?
- Oversee the development of product policies that are relevant to TikTok's global community, with a focus on protecting youth from harmful content and potential exploitation.
- Cultivate and maintain a psychologically safe, trusting team of Issue Policy Managers with a mindset to maximize both positive team camaraderie and significant business impact.
- Collaborate tightly with your Global Issue Policy Lead peers to set a cohesive, unified vision for policy teams on platform safety.
- Partner with adjacent Issue teams, like Harassment & Bullying and Adult Nudity & Sexuality, to identify when policy themes overlap and how we can best reconcile redundancies and nuances.
- Lead conversations with internal and external researchers to learn about regional perceptions of maturity and how those views can be adapted to our content policies.
- Consult with Legal and Communications teams on high-profile escalations and provide information on how, if at all, content violated our community guidelines or policy standards.
- Work with our Outreach & Partnerships team to identify and receive guidance from external Minor Safety and Adolescent Wellness experts, as well as internal cross-functional partners (Content Programming, Product Policy, Legal, Data Analytics, Operations, and others), to critically analyze and continuously improve our safety policies.
- Consult with the Leads of cross-functional teams on how features like Video, Comments, Follows, Likes, Accounts, etc. can be designed to reinforce our Minor Safety risk policies.
What I should bring with me?
- 6+ years working in Policy, Prevention Science, Social Work, Child Advocacy or another field with a focus on themes of child or adolescent wellbeing.
- 5+ years experience managing a team of direct reports with a high level of productivity and team harmony.
- Confident experience developing and refining policies that are designed to scale across global populations.
- Demonstrated track record for project management, complex cross-functional project collaboration, and strategic execution.
- A solutions mindset to regularly assess team productivity and develop strategic roadmaps to best leverage team skillsets, topic expertise, or diverse perspectives required to bolster policy effectiveness.
- Familiarity with international child protection laws and child rights advocacy, and an awareness for when to report content to child protection organizations.
- Understanding of Trust & Safety positioning in the entertainment media technology sector, with comfort learning internal tools and product workflows.
- Excellent communication skills and an ability to educate a wide variety of business stakeholders including Content Creative, Product Policy, Engineering, Public Policy, Legal, Communications, and Data Science on the nuances of Minor Safety topics.
Even better if:
- Experience working in non-western cultures, or knowledge of variations in culture and values across diverse populations.
- Familiarity designing codebooks, measures, questionnaires, surveys, etc. that are vetted for construct validity and rater reliability.
