About Opendoor:
Founded in 2014, Opendoor’s mission is to empower everyone with the freedom to move. We believe the traditional real estate process is broken and our goal is simple: build a digital, end-to-end customer experience that makes buying and selling a home simple, certain and fast. We have assembled a dedicated team with diverse backgrounds to support more than 100,000 homes bought and sold with us and the customers who have selected Opendoor as a trusted partner in handling one of their largest financial transactions. But the work is far from over as we continue to grow in new markets. Transforming the real estate industry takes tenacity and dedication. It takes problem solvers and builders. It takes a tight knit community of teammates doing the best work of their lives, pushing one another to transform a complicated process into a simple one.  So where do you fit in? Whether you’re passionate about real estate, people, numbers, words, code, or strategy -- we have a place for you. Real estate is broken. Come help us fix it.

About the Role:
As Head of Legal Operations at Opendoor, you will be a critical senior member of the Legal Team, responsible for driving efficiency in Opendoor’s legal and compliance operations and leading a growing team of Legal Operations professionals.  You will serve as a strategic operational partner focused on increasing legal operational efficiency, including planning, solving process and technology challenges that come with rapid growth, outside counsel management, and legal budget development and tracking.  This role is well suited for a proactive, hands-on, and experienced operations-focused professional who is excited by creating structure and insight through collaboration, data and technology, and enjoys managing and building teams focused on the same goals.  This position will report to the Head of Legal and can be based in any of our U.S. offices or remote, with strong preference for candidates willing to be based in our San Francisco, CA or Phoenix, AZ offices.

As Head of Legal Operations, you will:

  • Drive and develop a multi-year process improvement and technology roadmap for the Legal Team, partnering with internal stakeholders to ensure those priorities become reality.
  • Grow and lead a team of Legal Operations professionals, including other legal operations specialists, paralegals, and stock administrators.
  • Work collaboratively with Legal Team members to identify areas of improvement for legal and compliance workflows and processes, and propose and implement solutions.
  • Manage vendor relationships with our legal technology services providers, including e-billing, contract management ediscovery, document collection and hold management, legal entity support, and more.
  • Be a thought leader for how to improve Legal Team operations and processes as we grow at Opendoor, staying abreast of latest legal technology developments and assessing capabilities of solutions.
  • Develop, implement and iterate on appropriate metrics and benchmarking through data analytics to measure the Legal Team’s performance and efficiency.
  • Manage all legal budgeting, forecasting, and budget variance analysis and, in this capacity, will need strong expertise in matter management, and electronic billing systems.
  • Lead or support additional projects as needed, potentially including the ongoing ownership of longer term programs.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree from an accredited university.
  • At least 15 years experience of relevant operations experience (can be a combination of  experience in a major law firm and in-house experience); minimum of 5 years at the management level for a global technology company or large public company.
  • Deep working knowledge and hands-on experience with legal technology tools and applications; demonstrated ability to lead and execute on large-scale projects and technology implementations and change management (such as contract lifecycle management systems, knowledge management, e-billing, and counsel management tools).
  • A proven ability to use data and data-driven methods to drive better decision making. You are comfortable with metrics and working in spreadsheets and slides.
  • Prior experience developing playbooks, policies, and process documents
  • A strong ability as a natural problem solver and strategic thinker. You're comfortable with changing priorities and ambiguity and able to bring structure to chaos. You effectively identify and articulate implications up and downstream, taking action or escalating as appropriate.
  • A genuine passion for building teams and leaders within your org, and relationships cross-functionally.
  • Experience developing strategic or departmental planning materials requiring consensus gathering from multiple constituents (including finance, accounting, operations, IT and human resources) and have strong business partnering skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a growing legal team and cross-functionally with members at all levels of the organization, including executives, board members and investors.
