We are looking for an outstanding and experienced legal leader to join our fast-growing team as Deputy General Counsel for Product & a member of the Legal Leadership Team.  This is a new role that will bring together the legal leadership of all matters relating to Lime’s product portfolio: Hardware, Software & App. You will lead on all matters relating to our products: the critical elements of this will be managing product liability risk & personal injury litigation. In addition the role will involve managing our IP, trademark & patent portfolio, global commercial deals and supply chain contracts at one of the fastest growing startups in history.  ​​In this role, you will counsel senior business clients on strategic initiatives and key legal issues throughout the life cycle of our products. You will provide counsel on product development, technology/innovation, and post-launch regulatory matters.
 
You will develop strategies for handling legal issues in creative, business-centric ways. You will build processes that address risk and allow the business flexibility and freedom to move quickly. The successful candidate will be inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations.
 
For this new and exciting position you will have significant experience across product counselling, product recalls & product liability litigation across a range of hardware products. You will also have extensive US litigation experience including managing a portfolio of personal injury claims. You will have some experience in IP, trademark & patent protection as well. You will have at least 12 years experience working on these type of matters either in an in-house or private practice environment.  
You will also have extensive experience managing a large team & holding a leadership role within your prior experience including leading a team of attorneys responsible for product counseling. You will have experience in being an experienced legal business partner focused on pragmatic, business focused, & cost effective solutions.

What You’ll Do:

  • This role will advise on a full range of global legal issues relating to Lime’s exciting & innovative product range to protect Lime’s position in the market including product liability, safety & IP/TM/patent protection.
  • This role will also manage Lime’s litigation portfolio as it relates to product matters including responsibility for the personal injury litigation portfolio in North America.
  • You will oversee all aspects of Product legal strategy and guide us through complex regulatory and business decisions.
  • You will manage a team of 10 lawyers & legal professionals; you will be a member of the legal leadership team and part of the senior management of Lime.
  • You will advise the GC, the executive team and the board of directors on all matters relating to Lime’s products Work closely with our Engineering, Product and Design teams to ensure the legal team facilitates the work of those teams to build good product quickly.
  • You will principally advise on US state & federal law but will also manage Canada & Australia; you will partner closely with the North America &  EMEA regional teams regarding global product matters & strategy & the Regulatory Affairs & Compliance team.
  • Manage outside counsel.
  • .Work effectively across business units and corporate functions to resolve complex business and risk management issues.

About You:

  • JD/law degree and bar admission in at least one state or jurisdiction12+ years relevant experience product counseling roles at a firm or in-house, with in-house experience at leading technology, automotive or product led companies highly valued.
  • Ideally experience in working for or advising international businesses on multi-jurisdictional matters.
  • Extensive product liability and product litigation experience; personal injury experience & other litigation experience. Track record of working closely with product teams at product orientated companies and shipping high impact products.
  • Comfortable with defining a go-forward regulatory position for a two-sided marketplace (cities & riders)  with numerous creative verticals.
  • Passion for Lime and our mission.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with diligence, organization, and minimal supervision, and provide practical, business-friendly advice to clients.
  • Strong analytical and strategic skills; ability to drive issues to a quick resolution that factors in many non-legal variables, such as brand-risk, communications, government relations, tax, insurance, finance and other business units.
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks and to build the processes and systems to prevent them from occurring.

In accordance with Colorado State Law, if the candidate selected for this job resides in Colorado, the anticipated minimum salary will be $216,000 plus bonus and equity (when eligible) as well as benefits. Exact salary will ultimately depend on the candidate’s qualifications. In addition to base salary, this role will be eligible for a variable bonus based on a combination of management discretion and employee performance.
