About the Role

We are currently searching for an Associate General Counsel for our Labor & Employment team who is highly strategic and creative, and has broad legal and management experience and expertise as Uber continues to scale globally. This is a great opportunity to join a growing team and to work on groundbreaking issues in an exciting, fast-paced environment. This position reports to the Chief Deputy General Counsel and can be based in San Francisco, Washington D.C. or New York City.

What You'll Do

  • Be a trusted advisor to senior leadership, managers, Uber's HR team and other stakeholders, and provide critical legal and strategic advice on a wide range of complex issues involving Uber's employees, workers, and independent contractors, including but not limited to:
  • Lead worker classification litigation, future of work initiatives and product advice while proactively managing compliance with employment statutes and regulations.
  • Handle a wide variety of employment matters, including hiring, background checks, contingent worker relationships, performance management, employee relations, leaves of absence and accommodations, discrimination and harassment laws, wage and hour, internal investigations, compensation/benefits and termination issues.
  • Strategically resolve employment and compliance-related litigation, claims, investigations, subpoenas, etc.
  • Provide global employment law strategies and guidance to address business challenges and create organizational alignment.
  • Think outside the box to provide creative, strategic, and proactive legal advice to internal business groups. It's our job to peer around corners for the business and ensure that we are well positioned for the future.
  • Inspire and lead a strong global team aligned and prepared to implement Uber's legal and business strategies. Mentor and develop the team to meet business priorities and goals, as well as cultivate the individual career development of each team member. Have experience encouraging a team culture based on empathy, collaboration, mutual respect, and is someone with a genuine curiosity about the people they lead.
  • Communicate sophisticated concepts in a clear and structured manner. Work closely and cross-functionally to support Uber's goals and priorities.

Basic Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in private practice, government service, and/or in-house role.
  • Law degree from an accredited institution and active membership in good standing in at least one state bar.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Labor relations expertise desired.
  • Proven track record in building and leading an elite team of lawyers and legal professionals.
  • Superior analytical and legal skills, mature judgment, innovative thinking and a desire to take the initiative, think two steps ahead, and deliver creative solutions.
  • Ability to translate complex legal issues and ambiguity into clear and simple advice and to communicate effectively with non-legal internal colleagues.
  • Highly collaborative teammate, and ability to build deep relationships across teams and functions.
  • Excellent business judgment, communication and interpersonal skills to inspire and influence employees at every level.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and influence, persuade, and build consensus as well as thrive in high impact/high profile situations.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and growing into new areas of responsibility, with self-starter qualities.
  • Unquestioned integrity and ethics in business and personal conduct!
