This role involves leading and handling cutting-edge and complex integrity legal projects and matters. You must have flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and organizational needs. In addition, you must have the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, small but growing environment and work collaboratively and proactively with the legal teams well as other internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and tactical legal advice to our business team to support WhatsApp central and business integrity, internal infra and privacy initiatives

  • Serve as the company’s subject matter expert on legal obligations related to online safety and integrity issues such as child safety, real world harm, and violation of our policies

  • Support Legal and Public Policy teams’ engagement with regulators and legislators on safety & integrity issues

  • Provide legal advice across many subject areas including data protection laws and regulations, intermediary liability, consumer protection laws, WhatsApp terms of service/policies, and other global legal frameworks applicable to WhatsApp

  • Coordinate with public policy, communications, product management, engineering, product marketing, customer operations, and other cross-functional teams on safety & integrity matters, external communications, policy development, product development, and product launches

  • Counsel on product development and regulatory issues related to a number of WhatsApp business initiatives

  • Lead consensus-building and drive coordination with other members of the Legal team

Minimum Qualification

  • J.D. degree or equivalent, and membership in at least one U.S. state bar

  • 8+ years of combined law firm and/or in-house experience with internet or technology companies

  • Experience with product, privacy or regulatory counseling related to the above subject areas

  • Experience successfully taking on projects involving unfamiliar subject matters, and working effectively with cross-functional teams

  • Experience developing approaches to legal challenges while providing business-focused legal advice

  • Interpersonal skills with commitment to professionalism and collegiality

  • Experience leading cross-functional efforts and experience working on multiple projects

Preferred Qualification

  • Experience advising technology or telecommunications companies on regulatory, safety and security matters, investigations, policy and/or criminal process

  • Experience working on business-facing or enterprise software/platform

  • Experience working with Safety NGOs such as NCMEC and industry trade associations

  • Experience with CDA 230, 18 USC §2258A, SESTA-FOSTA, and other user generated content-based regulations

  • Experience working with U.S. and international law enforcement authorities
