DESCRIPTION

As Privacy Counsel, you will support Verily’s privacy efforts, working closely with product counsel, and our product development, compliance, IT and security teams. You will counsel executives and product teams on a broad array of data privacy and security laws that are implicated in the development and deployment of groundbreaking products and support the advancement of Verily’s overall data privacy program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide specialist legal advice and subject-matter expertise required to support Verily’s privacy program and product development.
  • Partner with our innovators through all stages of the product and feature development and commercialization lifecycle, while ensuring compliance with applicable global privacy and security regulations for our diverse suite of products, services and partnerships.
  • Provide specialist consultation and support to key functions, including Product Counsel, Commercial Counsel, Product Development, Trust & Compliance, Security, Public Policy and Marketing/Communications.
  • Provide sound compliance advice based on up-to-date knowledge of relevant data privacy and security regulations and industry guidelines across global markets, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”), the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR).
  • Maintain awareness of new laws, enforcement activity and other developments in the privacy domain, manage employee training and drive discussion among key stakeholders across the company to continuously improve organizational privacy practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have substantive experience working on privacy issues, ideally at the intersection of technology and health care, as well as strong interpersonal and project-management skills.

Minimum qualifications:

  • J.D. or equivalent degree.
  • 8+ years of attorney level experience.
  • 5+ years of experience with data privacy laws, including HIPAA, CCPA & GDPR.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in California.

Preferred qualifications:

Having as many of these specific qualifications is a plus, but transferable skills/experiences may be equally valuable.

  • Experience advising legal team members and product teams on a wide range of substantive privacy topics, preferably in healthcare or life sciences settings.
  • Experience negotiating data protection terms in a variety of enterprise agreements based on the U.S. and E.U. privacy frameworks.
  • Experience designing and implementing compliance programs, policies, and processes.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, commitment to professionalism and collegiality, flexibility and willingness to work on a broad range of legal matters and demonstrated ability to complete several simultaneous projects on a deadline.
  • CIPP or similar privacy certification preferred.
