Optum Labs is looking for an Associate General Counsel to join our legal team to support UnitedHealth Group’s AI/ML Responsible Use Program.  The successful candidate will work closely with technologists, data scientists, clinicians, attorneys and policy experts, and a wide range of other stakeholders across the UHG enterprise on cutting edge legal and regulatory issues impacting our AI/ML initiatives, our use of data and technology, and our innovation initiatives. 

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to business leaders, technologists, and colleagues on issues relating to the responsible development, procurement, deployment and use of AI/ML solutions
  • Provide legal advice and support for AI/ML product development and research projects, working in close collaboration with colleagues across the enterprise
  • Proactively research emerging regulations, use cases and case law, and best practices that might impact the AI/ML Responsible Use Program and related stakeholders
  • Work hand in hand with a wide range of internal stakeholders, including established governance groups, to create new policies and processes to support compliance with emerging regulations
  • Partner with internal businesses and experts, and actively participate in internal and industry groups and forums to keep abreast of technology, business, and legal developments
  • Negotiate agreements with AI/ML developers, vendors, and customers, in close collaboration with legal and business colleagues across the UHG enterprise
  • Provide legal support to the Optum Labs Qualified Entity program, including assisting with regulatory compliance and data licensing transactions
  • Structure, draft, and negotiate data licenses with academic medical centers and researchers
  • Model the Optum Labs Leadership Principles

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Actively licensed to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction
  • 4+ years of experience as a practicing attorney
  • Background or familiarity with AI/ML systems and model development and/or understanding of healthcare, health insurance and/or managed care industries
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential job function of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination, and boosters when applicable, prior to employment to ensure compliance. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Law firm and in-house counsel experience, supporting AI/ML or data-driven technology initiatives
  • Familiarity with emerging guidance from regulatory authorities, e.g., FDA, NAIC, etc., re. AI/ML systems and products
  • Commitment to voracious learning and willingness and ability to take ownership

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $113,500 to $218,100. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
