The Senior Counsel, Global Employment & Litigation will support the Databricks People Team and business partners on employment law matters in North America and other global locations as assigned, providing risk-weighted advice on a broad range of employment and litigation matters. You will also help support non-employment litigation.

You will be agile, highly organized and have the skills, drive and flexibility to support and accelerate this leading technology company, addressing cutting-edge legal issues and organizational challenges.

This is a full-time position based in California, Colorado, New York or the state of Washington, reporting to Databricks’ Senior Director and Associate General Counsel of Global Employment and Litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide pragmatic, risk-adjusted advice to Databricks’ People Team and business partners on employment-law related matters for Databricks’ North America offices, and other global locations as assigned, including hiring, performance management, terminations, discrimination, harassment, accommodations, leaves of absence, wage and hour issues, incentive compensation, benefits matters, employee investigations, restructuring plans and corporate development (M&A) activity
  • Monitor new laws, regulations and decisions affecting the substantive legal areas above and provide strategic, preventative advice to People Team and cross functional partners 
  • Oversee the drafting and negotiation of offer letters and employment-related agreements, including severance, separation, restrictive covenant, retention, and other employment-related agreements; draft employee-facing policies, handbooks, and other resources
  • Help lead training events on employment law related matters
  • Manage responses to pre litigation filing demands, including investigating claims, communicating with opposing counsel and negotiating resolutions
  • Draft and review pre-litigation and litigation documents, including correspondence with opposing counsel, pleadings, and mediation/arbitration statements
  • Manage outside counsel handling both employment and non-employment litigation and global projects, including management of budgets, directing litigation strategy, and reviewing pleadings and other documents
  • Support employment-related aspects of mergers, acquisitions, strategic investments, and divestitures, including due diligence and related integration efforts
  • Advice and counsel will be both on daily issues and strategic and systemic plans
  • Identify and implement process improvements that help the legal team, the People Team and the business scale for growth
  • Support Legal department and team related projects, as assigned

Qualifications & Experience Required

  • JD from an accredited institution; licensed to practice law in California, Colorado, New York or the state of Washington, 
  • 12+ years employment law and litigation experience; law firm and in-house experience required
  • Fluency translating legal advice into practical, risk adjusted, business-oriented advice
  • Experience supporting international business operations and partnering with People Team/HR and other professionals across multiple regions
  • Strong work ethic and the highest level of integrity and business ethics
  • Ability to build strong relationships quickly and work with all levels of People Team/HR and the business with ease
  • Great judgment and attention to detail, 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Tech sector experience preferred, including cloud services and big data
  • A desire to work on complex legal issues and in new global regions as we continue to expand
  • Experience working with a client-service focus  and a bias for action 
  • Assess quickly latest situations and develop practical options to respond to and resolve risks 
  • Strong aptitude and appetite for identifying, developing and implementing critical process improvements
