Avantor is seeking an experienced, highly motivated attorney to advise and counsel on regulatory and business issues related to regulated chemicals and other regulated products manufactured and/or distributed by the company. Responsibilities include providing advice, counsel, and support to the Regulatory/Export Trade Compliance Group related to government regulation of chemicals and other regulated product manufacturing, distribution, import, and export activities.
Functional Responsibilities:
- Providing legal oversight of chemical and other regulated product regulatory activities.
- Providing advice and counsel to Regulatory/Export Trade Compliance Group on compliance with the regulations, agency guidance and company policy regarding the federal Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA); Controlled Substances Act (CSA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
- Collaborating with Regulatory/Export Trade Compliance Group, business, and legal colleagues to mitigate risk, design solutions to regulatory issues, and drive positive business outcomes. This includes advising on U.S. export control regimes (Export Administration Regulations, International Traffic in Arms Regulation) and economic trade sanctions programs administered by the Office Of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
- Assisting with assessment of compliance with the CSA, TSCA, DEA, FDA, and EPA regulations, agency guidance, and company policy.
- Assessing legal risk and providing strategic advice to regulatory and business leaders related to regulated chemical and other regulated product manufacturing, distribution, import, and export compliance.
- Helping identify potential compliance and regulatory issues and managing internal investigations and remediation.
- Assisting with the preparation, management, and review of internal and external regulatory inspections and audits.
- Assisting Regulatory and Export Trade Compliance Group with responses to regulator requests and communications.
- Interfacing, communicating, and negotiating with regulators as needed.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of company policies/procedures and best practices.
Qualifying Competencies & Skills:
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, with strong academic credentials.
- Active bar admission.
- Minimum of 10 years relevant experience at a regulatory agency, law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination of all, with at least 2 years of in-house experience preferred.
- Knowledge of federal chemical regulatory framework and enforcement activities, including provisions of the CSA, DEA, FDA, TSCA, and EPA regulations and agency guidance.
- Experience with conflict between U.S. and foreign international trade laws (e.g., those of China), particularly sanctions, customs, and export controls.
- Experience with regulation of chemical manufacturing, distribution, import, and export activities.
- Experience interacting with compliance/regulatory professionals and regulators.
U.S. citizenship or possession of a valid green card (for compliance with federal regulatory requirements applicable to our business).
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering a plus.

- Flexibility to adapt to new company priorities, processes, initiatives, and risk tolerance, and the ability to offer practical, compliance-based solutions. Learn new areas of the business, the law, and evolving regulatory requirements.
