About The Role

Location: This role will be based out of East Hanover, New Jersey US under a Hybrid working model.

The Global Novartis Legal team is seeking a leader to lead a team of lawyers working within Novartis Operations for Region Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and the Mexico and Prague global operations centers and act as the Legal partner to senior global leadership, providing them with counsel on complex and sensitive legal issues. To be accountable for the quality of legal advice and support within own substantive area given to the Novartis Group of companies. To own and develop the substantive area expertise within the Novartis Group of companies.

What you will be doing:

  • Lead the development and implementation of the legal strategy within Novartis Operations for Region Americas, EMEA and the Mexico and Prague global operations centers and contribute to the development of the organization’s business strategy.
  • Provide legal leadership on issues across Novartis Operations by providing pro-active, in-depth, business focused advice and counsel.
  • Provide substantive legal counsel to senior management and the Legal Function as a whole, across one or more Divisions and countries.
  • Identify legal framework developments and guide the Cross-Divisional Legal group within the Top Priority country, aligning and promoting consistency of approach in legal matters between the Divisions.
  • Counsel senior-level executives and business teams within other functions on complex and sensitive legal and business issues, interact with other functions within Novartis to support Business Partner training and counsel non-Legal associates, and lead or contribute to both formal and informal teams in provision of legal expertise.
  • Anticipate and maintains up-to-date knowledge of current laws relevant to own substantive area to provide strategic advice and foster compliance.
  • Lead the development of and counsel on appropriate Novartis policies in connection with substantive area.
  • Oversee the management and development of large teams of attorneys globally.
  • Leads all regional legal activities related to the harmonization of standards, processes and templates across the, formerly divisionally managed, NTO organization to enable simplification, improvement and reduction of costs.
  • Represents Novartis Operations in Network Transformation; M&A and divestments within region
  • Manages potential disputes and dispute resolution relating to Novartis Operations transactions in the region; in particular, those with suppliers, contract manufacturers and alliance partners.
  • Reviews internal and external communications relating to Novartis Operations across the region.

Role Requirements

What you will bring to the role:

Education: Law school graduate and bar membership required.

Languages: Fluency in English essential.

Experience:

  • Extensive commercial legal experience in an international environment in-house and/or at a law firm with broad experience in handling pharmaceutical manufacturing and industry specific regulatory matters (20+ years).
  • More than five years’ experience in leading large, and legally complex, commercial transactions / projects.
  • Global cross-divisional experience in Novartis and/or a comparable organization.
  • People leadership experience and skills

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between: $222,400.00 and $333,600.00 USD per year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
