Description

Verily is seeking a strategic and proactive Labor & Employment attorney to join our Legal Department. As Lead Employment Counsel for Verily, you will work directly with a team of experts from the fields of biology, engineering, computer science, health economics, and more that support groundbreaking projects.

This role will focus primarily on advising business leaders and human resources on a variety of employment, labor, and benefits matters for the company to ensure compliance with laws across multiple jurisdictions in the US and abroad. The position will report to the Chief Counsel, Enterprise and requires collaboration with various functions throughout the company, as well as management and oversight of outside counsel. The role will provide ample opportunities to learn, be challenged, and grow professionally in a fast-paced environment. This position is based in our Dallas, TX office.

 

Responsibilities

  • Counsel Verily’s People & Culture Team (PACT) team on all aspects of employment, benefits, and labor matters such as: employee and contractor questions; HR practices; performance management; separation agreements; employment law claims (such as discrimination, harassment, and retaliation); disability, FMLA, leaves of absence, ADA, and reasonable. accommodation; EID efforts; discipline and terminations; recruiting; hiring; compensation and benefits; performance improvement plans; benefit plans; NLRB-related issues; internal investigations; and state and federal employment administrative complaints, investigations, and audits.
  • Assist in handling (and supervising outside counsel as required) pre-litigation claims, settlement negotiations, and federal and state litigation.
  • Stay abreast of changes to employment law and propose changes to employment-related templates, including offer letters, employee handbooks, employment policies, separation agreements, and contingent workforce issues. 
  • Work with Verily’s Trust and Compliance team to provide legal advice for internal investigations concerning potential code of conduct, conflicts of interest, financial misconduct, or other violations of internal Verily policies.
  • Collaborate efficiently and effectively across legal and business functions in a manner that adds value, balances risk, and protects the company’s reputation. 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from accredited institution, and active member of at least one state bar.
  • 8+ years of law firm or in-house corporate legal department experience. 
  • Experience providing advice on a broad range of employment issues, including HR practices, investigations, performance management, terminations, recruiting, hiring, compensation and benefits, wage and hour and labor relations, and employment disputes, including arbitration, mediation, and litigation.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws/regulations related to employment law issues (Title VII, ADEA, ADA, FLSA, FMLA), and NLRA.
  • Broad expertise with the legal issues pertaining to employment claims including wage and hour, discrimination, retaliation, FMLA, and restrictive covenant agreements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing of the California Bar.
  • Experience with non-US employment laws and procedures.
  • In-house experience advising the business on broad-based employment law topics.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad range of legal matters.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $216,000 - $320,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
