The Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office is seeking qualified candidates to join our team as an Assistant State’s Attorney for our Criminal and Traffic Divisions. The position may also entail additional responsibilities consistent with a small state’s attorney’s office, such as pay review, new prisoner/detention hearings, mental health hearings, civil hearings, etc., on an as-needed basis. This is a full-time position with no residency requirement in Cass County.

Requirements for this position include a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited ABA Law School and a valid license to practice law in Illinois and be in good standing. Desired expertise encompasses familiarity with preliminary hearings, motion hearings, jury/bench trials, sentencing hearings, petitions to revoke probation and post-conviction petitions. The role involves approximately three days per week in court, with the remaining days allocated for office preparation.

Proficiency in legal research and document drafting is essential, along with effective negotiation skills with opposing counsel and pro se litigants. The successful candidate will also be responsible for identifying necessary witnesses, issuing subpoenas and meeting with witnesses. While a minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience in criminal prosecution is strongly preferred, it is not a strict requirement.

Starting salary is $70,000 per year with pay increasing commensurate with experience. All full-time positions include a benefits package including health insurance as well as a pension plan through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.
