First Amendment attorney

Speech Law LLC
Posted Jan 20
Contract
Ohio

Speech Law LLC is Ohio's only law firm focused exclusively on defending the public's right to free speech.

Representative clients include government employees fired for reporting the misapporpriation of tax revenues, a little old lady facing criminal charges for giving her mother's nursing home a one-star review on Google, women sued for libel after calling their shared ex a narcissist, and reporters and other watchdogs seeking access to government records.

Our client list is growing quickly, so we are looking to expand beyond a solo operation and bring in litigators who can assist with our First Amendment portfolio.

Will you get rich in this job? Probably not. But you will get interesting cases, righteous causes, and a job that your friends and family actually want to hear about.

You'll enjoy a good measure of personal autonomy, as well. Though we officially have office space in downtown Cleveland, the work environment is essentially all virtual. Most of the firm's work product is generated in bakeries and coffee shops, and you'd likewise be generally free to work when and where you like.

Like everything else here, the application process is informal. Send a resume, or just send a link to your LinkedIn profile. Cover letters are neither required nor desired -- just send us your resume and answer three questions instead:

  1. What do you do better than most other lawyers?
  2. Why do you want to work at a firm that almost certainly cannot afford to pay you what you deserve?
  3. What would opposing counsel say about you?

The firm currently consists of one white guy, so we are especially eager to receive applications from candidates who can bring new perspectives and values to the firm.

Job requirements:

  • Ohio bar card
  • Healthy distrust of government authority

Not at all required, but especially appealing:

  • Substantial experience with criminal law
  • Substantial experience with civil trials
  • Background in First Amendment law
  • Experience defending government agencies
  • Fluency with MS Excel
  • Fluency in a programming language or other IT experience
  • Physical presence in the Southern District of Ohio
