Who We Are Looking For: We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Assistant Chief Legal Officer – HR & Technology to develop and lead the HR & Technology Group of the Law Department. In this senior role, you will report to the Chief Legal Officer of the company and develop your legal support team. The HR & Technology Group will be responsible for ensuring legal compliance in all HR and employment practices, mitigate legal risks to the company with respect to both HR and technology issues, propose creative and practical solutions, and generally representing and protecting the company across the broad spectrum of issues relating to the human capital and intellectual capital of the company. The HR & Technology Group will be responsible for ensuring legal compliance in all HR and employment practices, mitigate legal risks, propose creative and practical solutions, and enabling the company to help lead the journey to become the most innovative and disruptive leader in multi-family housing in the United States. This role will require a deep knowledge, understanding, and issue recognition of human resources, employment law, and intellectual property issues.

Responsibilities:

  • Drafting and reviewing HR policies and procedures, updating HR policies and procedures, ensuring that these align with current legal requirements. This includes policies related to equal employment opportunity, workplace conduct, and employee benefits.
  • Drafting and reviewing employment contracts including terms and conditions of employment, non-compete agreements, NDA’s, and confidentiality clauses, to protect the company’s interests and legal compliance.
  • Stay up to date and compliant with labor laws to ensure that the company complies with federal, state, and local labor laws, which may include minimum wage and overtime requirements, family and medical leave, and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Handle all employment litigation, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims against the company.
  • Ensure that any employee terminations and severance agreements comply with employment laws and protect the company's interests.
  • Continuously monitor changes in employment law, such as new regulations and court rulings, and advise the company on adapting policies and practices accordingly.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel on employment-related issues to help the organization understand their rights and obligations under employment law.
  • Mitigates legal risks and provides proactive advice on actions that can minimize the likelihood of future legal disputes and protect the company's reputation.
  • Handle or advise on employee complaints related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, or any other workplace issue, investigate, interview, evidence collecting, analyze and recommend the best course of action.
  • Engage in settlement negotiations to resolve legal disputes without going to court. Work to protect the company's interests while seeking a fair resolution.
  • Coordinate the workflow within the HR and legal team, assigning cases, projects, and legal research tasks as needed. Ensure that team members have clear instructions and access to necessary resources.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to provide a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, review ongoing cases, discuss emerging legal issues, and update team members on relevant changes in employment law.
  • Maintain open and transparent communication within the HR and legal team. Ensure that information is shared promptly and that team members can collaborate effectively.
  • Develop a comprehensive strategy to protect the intellectual property of the company through the use of patents, trademarks, service marks, copyrights, and other IP protection strategies.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Minimum 7+ years law firm and/or in-house real estate experience.
  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a top-tier U.S. law school, coupled with U.S. Bar admission and good standing, preferably with the Texas or multiple State Bars.
  • Strong writing, organizational and analytical skills, the ability to run transactions autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Outstanding deal and time management skills and the ability to prioritize a heavy workload efficiently.
  • Extensive experience handling sophisticated dollar real estate transactions.
  • Sound judgment and ability to make well-informed decisions in complex legal matters specific to corporate real estate operations.

Additional details:

  • This position is in Downtown Houston, Texas 77002.
  • The salary range is from $156,000 to $286,000 and may be adjusted based on experience, education, knowledge, skills, and previous salary history.
  • This is a primarily on-site role (Monday through Friday). Given the nature of the business, we do not offer remote working opportunities.
  • The ideal candidate is seeking immediate employment and can be available to start immediately or within a maximum of two weeks upon final employment agreement.
  • Limited relocation assistance may be provided for the ideal candidate if necessary.
