Legal Counsel, Real Estate

Position Overview

Provides legal services and advice in connection with the company’s commercial mortgage lending program, mortgage loan servicing, and real estate transactions. Documents, negotiates and closes commercial mortgage loans and real estate transactions. Reviews and prepares real estate contracts, leases and other real estate related documentation and agreements.

Responsibilities

  • With limited supervision, assists the Assistant General Counsel and other members of Global Legal Services and Real Estate Investments by providing timely legal advice and services in connection with the Company’s commercial mortgage lending program, mortgage loan servicing and real estate transactions.
  • Prepares, reviews and negotiates commercial mortgage loan documents, reviews major leases, title commitments and surveys and other due diligence documents delivered in connection with commercial mortgages loans.
  • Oversees the assignment and coordination of all commercial mortgage loan transactions and resolves issues arising with respect to loan applications prior to closing.
  • Provides advice and legal services in connection with mortgage loan servicing and asset management and prepares required documentation such as subordination, nondisturbance and attornment agreements and loan modification agreements.
  • Responsible for handling special servicing matters, such as loan defaults, forbearance and foreclosures, sales of real estate owned investments, corporate office leasing and other real estate transactions and special projects.
  • Assists in training junior associates and legal interns and monitors outside legal counsel involved with commercial mortgage loan and loan servicing transactions.
  • Review leases, contracts and agreements, perform other duties as assigned and maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Requirements

Education And Experience

Required:

  • Law degree from a United States accredited law school
  • Bachelor’s degree from a United States accredited university
  • 5+ years of experience in a real estate related field
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. State

  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. real estate laws and regulations
  • Competent ability to comprehend and interpret business and contract documents
  • Client counseling skills in translating business needs and problems into viable and accepted solutions
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to clearly present appropriate business terminology and concepts
  • Ability to work with very limited supervision
  • Advanced negotiating and persuasion skills
  • Advanced ability to investigate, analyze and solve complex problems/issues
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and drive change, ensuring understanding, participation and ownership
  • Advanced ability to set goals and handle multiple tasks, clients, and projects simultaneously; Ability to appropriately balance priorities, deadlines, and deliverables
  • Ability to work well within a team environment and participate in department/team projects
  • Advanced skills in customer relationship management and change management
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills

Preferred:

  • Experience in a real estate investment environment

The general pay range for this position is $140k-$170k base per year. Base pay varies depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and market location.
