Job Description

The Department of Insurance and Financial Services is currently accepting applications for a full-time General Counsel that will oversee all aspects of the department's legal duties and responsibilities.

Responsibilities Include

  • Performs special legal projects assigned by the Commissioner which includes model law and regulation work with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and provides written or verbal updates to the executive leadership team.
  • Advises on questions of law or administrative policies involved in the operation of the Department and the Insurance Division in its engagement with the industry.
  • Performs legal review and analysis and makes recommendations of regulatory filings made by insurers regarding compliance with Iowa law and the Accounting Practices & Procedures Manual.
  • Reviews articles of incorporation and bylaws of Iowa domiciled insurers to determine compliance with Iowa statutes and regulations.
  • Serves as a hearing officer.
  • Drafts and/or reviews proposed agency decisions; receives and evaluates evidence and the law to prepare proposed findings of fact.
  • Provides leadership and/or assistance to other professional staff members.

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Department of Insurance and Financial Services . Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school, and experience equal to five years of full-time work in the practice of law.
  • Graduation from an accredited law school, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in the practice of law in the employing agency

Additional Qualification Requirements

Employees in this job class must be licensed to practice law in the state of Iowa
