In the director, corporate counsel – Labor role at Starbucks, you will play an integral role in a highly complex, dynamic and fast-paced organization by acting as a legal advisor to internal clients on traditional labor law matters. This role requires effectively conveying legal risk, while also identifying solutions to achieve business objectives in compliance with our Mission and Values.

You will provide leadership in the development and implementation of the Company’s labor relations strategies, as well as provide legal counsel to our business units in the United States and Canada on all aspects of traditional labor law. You will work with and oversee a team of outside counsel and in-house paralegals to respond to NLRB charges and petitions, defend administrative hearings and litigation, manage collective bargaining contract negotiations, and oversee day-to-day labor relations matters.

Leveraging Your Previous Experience, We Will Enable You To

  • Guide – Clearly and concisely convey traditional labor law counseling to Starbucks business leaders at varying levels in multiple business units in the United States and Canada.
  • Collaborate – Establish highly collaborative relationships with clients, peers, and external constituents to provide support for internal business clients, including helping paralegals and other support staff to succeed, and lead through influence with maturity and humility.
  • Be a Trusted Advisor – Help advance business objectives and mitigate risk by acting as a trusted advisor whose strategic thinking, business acumen, pragmatic problem-solving and proactive counsel are sought out by clients.

We’d Love To Hear From People With

  • At least 12 years’ experience practicing traditional labor law in a law firm, in-house legal department and/or government agency.
  • Comprehensive expertise in traditional labor laws and experience counseling business clients including senior leaders on a wide range of labor relations matters.
  • Significant experience managing labor organizing campaigns and related NLRB proceedings, including bargaining unit certification, litigating unfair labor practice charges, defending Section 10(j) injunction matters and strike contingency planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiating collective bargaining agreements, litigating bargaining agreement disputes and enforcement of CBAs.
  • Knowledge of corporate campaigns and responsive strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to build interdepartmental relationships at all levels and drive consensus on legal matters among multiple stakeholders through direct and indirect influence.
  • Experience managing outside counsel to ensure efficiency and prudent financial stewardship.
  • Demonstrated history of challenging the status quo, questioning assumptions and past practices, identifying improvements to mitigate risks and working with stakeholders to implement solutions.
  • Experience and judgment necessary to operate with significant autonomy in advising leaders at all levels from first-line managers to senior executives.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity applying sound judgment, a constructive attitude, critical thinking, composure, a sense of balance and adaptability.
  • Demonstrated skill at being a team builder and team player.
  • Experience with retail business operations is a plus, but not required.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 25%.
  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law and an active member in good standing of at least one state bar.
