Corteva is seeking a candidate to fill a State Government and Industry Affairs Lead - Western Region role virtually located in California covering the Western U.S. regional territory. The Western regional lead will support the company's world class seeds, traits, and crop protection platforms consisting of agronomic traits, as well as a dynamic crop protection business. This role is critical to bringing these novel technologies to the marketplace in a timely manner. The regional lead will coordinate with the company's business and regulatory leaders, and direct efforts on critical government policy issues in the region.

What You'll Do

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with state government authorities, including the state's elected and appointed officials, with a focus on those overseeing state agriculture, environment, and climate policy.
  • Develop, lead, and oversee state advocacy strategies necessary to achieve on-time product approvals and to defend freedom to operate.
  • Provide proactive counsel and guidance to commercial and R&D organizations..
  • Actively engage elected government officials to reconcile priorities?, advocate for appropriate science-based approaches, and proactively educate on trending issues.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with state regulators, legislators, policymakers and agri-business leaders, including all appropriate trade associations.
  • Network with state value chain allies, customers, and end-users to promote stewardship goals and support regulatory, commercial and product objectives.
  • Identify and build local coalitions as necessary to advance the company's commercial, advocacy, policy, and issue management objectives.
  • Lead and implement state advocacy and government affairs strategies and influence corporate direction and success through active participation on the Global and North America Public Affairs team(s) and other internal cross-functional teams.
  • Develop, implement, and manage state level political activities aligned with legislative and regulatory policy initiatives.
  • Effectively prioritize and manage local and state external engagement activities including appropriate representation of company's interests with industry and community organizations.
  • Facilitate interactions by business and functional representatives with key policy officials, including advising on testimony before legislative committees to present positions on pending legislation, regulatory proposals, and policy debates.
  • Develop, lead, and facilitate state grassroots and grasstops strategies aligned with key corporate objectives.
  • Represent company interests at state legislative venues and with state policy and regulatory makers.
  • Prepare and submit lobbying reports as required. Participate in the development and implementation of budgets for expenses related to lobbying activities, trade association memberships, and political contributions.

Qualifications

What Skills You Need:

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree with minimum of 10+ years of government affairs or policy advocacy experience.
  • Existing knowledge of and network in the state of California, including strong relationships with California government at all levels, with a focus on elected officials.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and multiple stakeholders.
  • Agricultural background or experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to analyze, assess, critically evaluate, and advise diverse commercial and R&D audiences on local advocacy options to meet objectives.
  • Demonstrated competency and ability to understand, distill, assimilate, and communicate complex information and conclusions to diverse external audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience and know-how in working with government policymakers to advocate policies and positions.
  • Ability to work with and effectively lead coalitions to achieve timely results.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local and state governmental processes.
  • Preferred experience working for state or federal legislative body or regulatory agency.
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills a must--job entails communication with diverse internal and external stakeholders (executive leadership, commercial organization, Legal, Public Affairs, Government Relations, key value chain customers, government policymakers and regulators, community relations and members of the public).
  • Must have the ability to effectively prioritize competing needs, then synthesize complex issues into clear and tangible work plans.
  • Must be a self-starter with a bias for action who thrives on successfully working through challenging opportunities and issues to meet time-sensitive objectives and deadlines. The position will require travel and will vary in intensity throughout the year (
